44 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro : quem qui invenit homo, abscondit, et prae gaudio illius vadit, et vendit universa quae habet, et emit agrum illum.
45 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls.
Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori, quaerenti bonas margaritas.
46 Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit, et vendidit omnia quae habuit, et emit eam.
47 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes.
Iterum simile est regnum caelorum sagenae missae in mare, et ex omni genere piscium congreganti.
48 Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth.
Quam, cum impleta esset, educentes, et secus littus sedentes, elegerunt bonis in vasa, malos autem foras miserunt.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just.
Sic erit in consummatione saeculi : exibunt angeli, et separabunt malos de medio justorum,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
et mittent eos in caminum ignis : ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
51 Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes.
Intellexistis haec omnia? Dicunt ei : Etiam.
52 He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.
Ait illis : Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum, similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera.
The daughter of the King of Aragon and the grandniece of St Elizabeth of Hungary, St Elizabeth married Denis, Kindg of Portugal. Becoming a widow, she entered the Order of the Poor Clares and died A.D. 1336.
15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Attendite a falsis prophetis, qui veniunt ad vos in vestimentis ovium, intrinsecus autem sunt lupi rapaces :
16 By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
a fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos. Numquid colligunt de spinis uvas, aut de tribulis ficus?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Sic omnis arbor bona fructus bonos facit : mala autem arbor malos fructus facit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit.
Non potest arbor bona malos fructus facere : neque arbor mala bonos fructus facere.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire.
Omnis arbor, quae non facit fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur.
20 Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.
Igitur ex fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos.
21 Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Non omnis qui dicit mihi, Domine, Domine, intrabit in regnum caelorum : sed qui facit voluntatem Patris mei, qui in caelis est, ipse intrabit in regnum caelorum.
27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck.
Factum est autem, cum haec diceret : extollens vocem quaedam mulier de turba dixit illi : Beatus venter qui te portavit, et ubera quae suxisti.
28 But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.
At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud.
15 Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall not enter into it.
Amen dico vobis : Quisquis non receperit regnum Dei velut parvulus, non intrabit in illud.
16 And embracing them, and laying his hands upon them, he blessed them.
Et complexans eos, et imponens manus super illos, benedicebat eos.
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, a certain man running up and kneeling before him, asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting?
Et cum egressus esset in viam, procurrens quidam genu flexo ante eum, rogabat eum : Magister bone, quid faciam ut vitam aeternam percipiam?
18 And Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? None is good but one, that is God.
Jesus autem dixit ei : Quid me dicis bonum? nemo bonus, nisi unus Deus.
19 Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, bear not false witness, do no fraud, honour thy father and mother.
Praecepta nosti : ne adulteres, ne occidas, ne fureris, ne falsum testimonium dixeris, ne fraudum feceris, honora patrem tuum et matrem.
20 But he answering, said to him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth.
At ille respondens, ait illi : Magister, haec omnia observavi a juventute mea.
21 And Jesus looking on him, loved him, and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
Jesus autem intuitus eum, dilexit eum, et dixit ei : Unum tibi deest : vade, quaecumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in caelo : et veni, sequere me.
St Anthony Mary, born at Cremona in Italy, took his degree as doctor of medicine at Padua, but God called him to the priesthood. He founded the Order of Barnabites. He died A.D. 1539.
1 In those days again, when there was a great multitude, and had nothing to eat; calling his disciples together, he saith to them:
In diebus illis iterum cum turba multa esset, nec haberent quod manducarent, convocatis discipulis, ait illis :
2 I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat.
Misereor super turbam : quia ecce jam triduo sustinent me, nec habent quod manducent :
3 And if I shall send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; for some of them came from afar off.

4 And his disciples answered him: From whence can any one fill them here with bread in the wilderness?
Et responderunt ei discipuli sui : Unde illos quis poterit saturare panibus in solitudine?
5 And he asked them: How many loaves have ye? Who said: Seven.
Et interrogavit eos : Quot panes habetis? Qui dixerunt : Septem.
6 And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke, and gave to his disciples for to set before them; and they set them before the people.
Et praecepit turbae discumbere super terram. Et accipiens septem panes, gratias agens fregit, et dabat discipulis suis ut apponerent, et apposuerunt turbae.
7 And they had a few little fishes; and he blessed them, and commanded them to be set before them.
Et habebant pisciculos paucos : et ipsos benedixit, et jussit apponi.
8 And they did eat and were filled; and they took up that which was left of the fragments, seven baskets.
Et manducaverunt, et saturati sunt, et sustulerunt quod superaverat de fragmentis, septem sportas.
9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away.
Erant autem qui manducaverunt, quasi quatuor millia : et dimisit eos.
28 And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Et nolite timere eos qui occidunt corpus, animam autem non possunt occidere : sed potius timete eum, qui potest et animam et corpus perdere in gehennam.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.
Nonne duo passeres asse veneunt? et unus ex illis non cadet super terram sine Patre vestro.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Vestri autem capilli capitis omnes numerati sunt.
31 Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.
Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus meliores estis vos.
32 Every one therefore that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.
Omnis ergo qui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in caelis est.
33 But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.
Qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabo et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in caelis est.
He was a disciple of St Polycarp of Smyrna, wrote much against heretics, succeeded St Pothinus in the See of Lyons and died during the persecution of Septimus Severus A.D. 202.
39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
Exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis, abiit in montana cum festinatione, in civitatem Juda :
40 And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
et intravit in domum Zachariae, et salutavit Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Et factum est, ut audivit salutationem Mariae Elisabeth, exsultavit infans in utero ejus : et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth :
42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
et exclamavit voce magna, et dixit : Benedicta tu inter mulieres, et benedictus fructus ventris tui.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et unde hoc mihi, ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me?
44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuae in auribus meis, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo.
45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
Et beata, quae credidisti, quoniam perficientur ea, quae dicta sunt tibi a Domino.
46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
Et ait Maria : Magnificat anima mea Dominum :
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.
The Visitation of Our Blessed Lady. The Blessed Virgin Mary visits Elizabeth and Jesus visits and sanctifies John. Wherefore St John leaps with joy and Elizabeth filled with the Holy Ghost exclaims "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb".
30 Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
Cum ergo accepisset Jesus acetum, dixit : Consummatum est. Et inclinato capite tradidit spiritum.
31 Then the Jews, (because it was the parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Judaei ergo ( quoniam parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato ( erat enim magnus dies ille sabbati), rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.
32 The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him.
Venerunt ergo milites : et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo.
33 But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
Ad Jesum autem cum venissent, ut viderunt eum jam mortuum, non fregerunt ejus crura,
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.
sed unus militum lancea latus ejus aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua.
35 And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe.
Et qui vidit, testimonium perhibuit : et verum est testimonium ejus. Et ille scit quia vera dicit : ut et vos credatis.

Jesus miraculously feeds 4000. He foreshadows how he will feed the souls of men by means of the Holy Sacament-True Bread from heaven.
13 And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?
Venit autem Jesus in partes Caesareae Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?
14 But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
At illi dixerunt : Alii Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Jeremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.
15 Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?
Dicit illis Jesus : Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?
16 Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.
Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Beatus es Simon Bar Jona : quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in caelis est.
18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.
Peter's confession of the Godhead of Christ. He is declared by our Lord to be the Rock on which the Church rests securely.
15 When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.
Cum ergo prandissent, dicit Simoni Petro Jesus : Simon Joannis, diligis me plus his? Dicit ei : Etiam Domine, tu scis quia amo te. Dicit ei : Pasce agnos meos.
16 He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.

17 He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep.
Dicit ei tertio : Simon Joannis, amas me? Contristatus est Petrus, quia dixit ei tertio : Amas me? et dixit ei : Domine, tu omnia nosti, tu scis quia amo te. Dixit ei : Pasce oves meas.
18 Amen, amen I say to thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst walk where thou wouldst. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not.
Amen, amen dico tibi : cum esses junior, cingebas te, et ambulabas ubi volebas : cum autem senueris, extendes manus tuas, et alius te cinget, et ducet quo tu non vis.
19 And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me.
Hoc autem dixit significans qua morte clarificaturus esset Deum. Et cum hoc dixisset, dicit ei : Sequere me.
20 For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Dico enim vobis, quia nisi abundaverit justitia vestra plus quam scribarum, et pharisaeorum, non intrabitis in regnum caelorum.
21 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.
Audistis quia dictum est antiquis : Non occides : qui autem occiderit, reus erit judicio.
22 But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Ego autem dico vobis : quia omnis qui irascitur fratri suo, reus erit judicio. Qui autem dixerit fratri suo, raca : reus erit concilio. Qui autem dixerit, fatue : reus erit gehennae ignis.
23 If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee;
Si ergo offers munus tuum ad altare, et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te :
24 Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.
relinque ibi munus tuum ante altare, et vade prius reconciliari fratri tuo : et tunc veniens offeres munus tuum.
1 And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Multis autem turbis circumstantibus, ita ut se invicem conculcarent, coepit dicere ad discipulos suos : Attendite a fermento pharisaeorum, quod est hypocrisis.
2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known.
Nihil autem opertum est, quod non reveletur : neque absconditum, quod non sciatur.
3 For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops.
Quoniam quae in tenebris dixistis, in lumine dicentur : et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis, praedicabitur in tectis.
4 And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
Dico autem vobis amicis meis : Ne terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus, et post haec non habent amplius quid faciant.
5 But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him.
Ostendam autem vobis quem timeatis : timete eum qui, postquam occiderit, habet potestatem mittere in gehennam : ita dico vobis, hunc timete.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipondio, et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo?
7 Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.

8 And I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.

These two brothers were officers under Constantine. After the death of the Christian Emperor, they became martyrs at Rome in the persecution of Julian the Apostate, A.D. 362.
27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?
Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei : Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te : quid ergo erit nobis?
28 And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus autem dixit illis : Amen dico vobis, quod vos, qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione cum sederit Filius hominis in sede majestatis suae, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, judicantes duodecim tribus Israel.
29 And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.
Et omnis qui reliquerit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, et vitam aeternam possidebit.
St William spent his life in meditation on divine things. In view of the number of his disciples he founded the Congregation of Monte Vergine, a branch of the Order of St Benedict. He died A.D. 1142.
57 Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.
Elisabeth autem impletum est tempus pariendi, et peperit filium.
58 And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.
Et audierunt vicini et cognati ejus quia magnificavit Dominus misericordiam suam cum illa, et congratulabantur ei.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father's name Zachary.
Et factum est in die octavo, venerunt circumcidere puerum, et vocabant eum nomine patris sui Zachariam.
60 And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.
Et respondens mater ejus, dixit : Nequaquam, sed vocabitur Joannes.
61 And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Et dixerunt ad illam : Quia nemo est in cognatione tua, qui vocetur hoc nomine.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
Innuebant autem patri ejus, quem vellet vocari eum.
63 And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.
Et postulans pugillarem scripsit, dicens : Joannes est nomen ejus. Et mirati sunt universi.
64 And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
Apertum est autem illico os ejus, et lingua ejus, et loquebatur benedicens Deum.
65 And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.
Et factus est timor super omnes vicinos eorum : et super omnia montana Judaeae divulgabantur omnia verba haec :
66 And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
et posuerunt omnes qui audierant in corde suo, dicentes : Quis, putas, puer iste erit? etenim manus Domini erat cum illo.
67 And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:
Et Zacharias pater ejus repletus est Spiritu Sancto : et prophetavit, dicens :
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, quia visitavit, et fecit redemptionem plebis suae :

Born at Bordeaux, Paulinus was elected consul of Nola (Italy). Touched by grace at the tomb of St Felix, he abandoned earthly goods and became a priest. He became bishop of Nola, and his life of asceticism and charity made him one of the greatest Bishops of the fifth century. He died A.D. 431.

St Aloysius is the patron of Catholic youth. Amid the seductions of court the young prince, full of merits and virtues, kept his first innocence by marvels of mortification. He entered the Society of Jesus in Rome at the age of sixteen, and died there seven years later a victim to the plague, June 21, A.D. 1591.

Gregory Barbarigo, Cardinal Archbishop of Padua, died in 1697 with the reputation of another Charles Borromeo, renowned like him for his wonderful zeal in every kind of labour for the clergy and faithful, but especially the poor, of his diocese.

One of the greatest Franciscan Saints, St Anthony was a profound theologian, a brilliant preacher, a formidable foe to heresy and a terror to heretics, through the supernatural forces which seemed always at his command. He was born in Lisbon, but laboured chiefly in Italy, where he died A.D. 1231.
35 Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.

36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.

St John preached peace during time of war, distributed his revenues among the poor and devoted his time to works of charity. He died as a hermit A.D. 1470.
16 Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves.

St Barnabas was not one of the Twelve. He was the companion of St Paul and merited the title of Apostle by his preaching and labours. He was stoned, A.D. 61.
44 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

Margaret was born in Hungary, though of the Saxon royal stock and was married to Malcom III, King of Scotland. Her long reign of 30 years was illustrious of her inexhaustable charity for the poor. She died A.D. 1093 and is honored among the patrons of Scotland.

14 For even as a man going into a far country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods;

Three things made Francis of Caracciolo stand out from his wealthy Neopolitan friends: he was powerfully drawn to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, he fasted every Saturday, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and he had a generous love for the poor. When he was seriously ill at the age of twenty-two, he vowed that if he were cured he would devote himself to the service of God and to his felloq men. He became a priest and was the founder of the Order of Minor Clerks Regular. Francis instituted perpetual adoration as one of the works of his order. He died A.D. 1608.

Christ feeds five thousand with five loaves. He walks upon the sea and discourses of the bread of life.
1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.
Post haec abiit Jesus trans mare Galilaeae, quod est Tiberiadis :
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

12 And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.

14 Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world.

15 Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.

16 And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea.

20 But he saith to them: It is I; be not afraid.

21 They were willing therefore to take him into the ship; and presently the ship was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there but one, and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone.

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26 Jesus answered them, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.

28 They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.

30 They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew, that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work?

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world.

Christ discourses of the bread of life.
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.
Tunc simile erit regnum caelorum decem virginibus : quae accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsae.
2 And five of them were foolish, and five wise.
Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuae, et quinque prudentes :
3 But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them:
sed quinque fatuae, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps.

5 And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him.

8 And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.

9 The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.

11 But at last come also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not.
At ille respondens, ait : Amen dico vobis, nescio vos.
13 Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.
Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.
St Angela adopted the rule of St Francis, and later founded the Order of the Ursulines uniting "evangelical poverty to the merit of virginity." She died A.D. 1540.
26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David : et nomen virginis Maria.
28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit : Ave gratia plena : Dominus tecum : benedicta tu in mulieribus.
29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
Quae cum audisset, turbata est in sermone ejus, et cogitabat qualis esset ista salutatio.
30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
Et ait angelus ei : Ne timeas, Maria : invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum.
31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium, et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum :
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.
hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus : et regnabit in domo Jacob in aeternum,
33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
et regni ejus non erit finis.
56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.
Caro enim mea vere est cibus : et sanguis meus, vere est potus;
57 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him.
qui manducat meam carnem et bibit meum sanguinem, in me manet, et ego in illo.
58 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.
Sicut misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem : et qui manducat me, et ipse vivet propter me.
59 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.
Hic est panis qui de caelo descendit. Non sicut manducaverunt patres vestri manna, et mortui sunt. Qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in aeternum.
The Eucharist is instituted in the form of food, so that we may receive in Holy Communion the Victim of the Cross.
