⁣And it came to pass, after the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem, and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God, for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

⁣And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him.
Qui cum recessissent, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis Joseph, dicens : Surge, et accipe puerum, et matrem ejus, et fuge in Aegyptum, et esto ibi usque dum dicam tibi. Futurum est enim ut Herodes quaerat puerum ad perdendum eum.
14 Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod:

15 That it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry; and sending killed all the men children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying:

18 A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
Vox in Rama audita est ploratus, et ululatus multus : Rachel plorans filios suos, et noluit consolari, quia non sunt.

⁣Christ manifests himself to his disciples by the sea side and gives Peter the charge of his sheep.

19 And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me.
Hoc autem dixit significans qua morte clarificaturus esset Deum. Et cum hoc dixisset, dicit ei : Sequere me.
⁠ 20 ⁠Peter turning about, saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said: Lord, who is he that shall betray thee?
Conversus Petrus vidit illum discipulum, quem diligebat Jesus, sequentem, qui et recubuit in coena super pectus ejus, et dixit : Domine, quis est qui tradet te?
⁠ 21 ⁠Him therefore when Peter had seen, he saith to Jesus: Lord, and what shall this man do?
Hunc ergo cum vidisset Petrus, dixit Jesu : Domine, hic autem quid?
⁠ 22 ⁠Jesus saith to him: So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? follow thou me.
Dicit ei Jesus : Sic eum volo manere donec veniam, quid ad te? tu me sequere.
⁠ 23 ⁠This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. And Jesus did not say to him: He should not die; but, So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee?
Exiit ergo sermo iste inter fratres quia discipulus ille non moritur. Et non dixit ei Jesus : Non moritur, sed : Sic eum volo manere donec veniam, quid ad te?
⁠ 24 ⁠This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
Hic est discipulus ille qui testimonium perhibet de his, et scripsit haec : et scimus quia verum est testimonium ejus.


St John is the virgin Apostle who knew how to conquer his flesh, for this reason he became the disciple whom Jesus loved, and who also leaned on His breast at supper.

⁣⁣Jesus had upbraided the Jews for having killed and stoned the Prophets. Our Lord foretold their martrydom for His Name's sake. The Jews fulfilled the words of the Saviour, and Stephen is the first of the witnesses of Christ.


34 Therefore behold I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:
Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos prophetas, et sapientes, et scribas, et ex illis occidetis, et crucifigetis, et ex eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris, et persequemini de civitate in civitatem :
⁠ 35 ⁠That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.
ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis justus, qui effusus est super terram, a sanguine Abel justi usque ad sanguinem Zachariae, filii Barachiae, quem occidistis inter templum et altare.
⁠ 36 ⁠Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
Amen dico vobis, venient haec omnia super generationem istam.
⁠ 37 ⁠Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not?
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, quae occidis prophetas, et lapidas eos, qui ad te missi sunt, quoties volui congregare filios tuos, quemadmodum gallina congregat pullos suos sub alas, et noluisti?
⁠ 38 ⁠Behold, your house shall be left to you, desolate.
Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta.
⁠ 39 ⁠For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Dico enim vobis, non me videbitis amodo, donec dicatis : Benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini.


Stephen, one of the seven Deacons, chosen by the Apostles amongst the most pious and holy disciples, to help them, received from them mission to organize the meals where the poor were fed in common. St Stephen was renowned for his virtues and worked such great signs and wonders among the people that the Jews from five different synagogues became alarmed and summoned him before the Sanhedrin. The Jews stoned this holy Deacon, who invoked our Lord saying: "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit... Lord, lay not this sin to their charge." His name is inscribed in the Canon of the Mass.

⁣Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.

19 Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.
Joseph autem vir ejus cum esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.
Haec autem eo cogitante, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis ei, dicens : Joseph, fili David, noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam : quod enim in ea natum est, de Spiritu Sancto est.
21 And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.

⁣Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea, and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina;
Anno autem quintodecimo imperii Tiberii Caesaris, procurante Pontio Pilato Judaeam, tetrarcha autem Galiaeae Herode, Philippo autem fratre ejus tetrarcha Ituraeae, et Trachonitidis regionis, et Lysania Abilinae tetrarcha,
2 Under the high priests Annas and Caiphas; the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert.
sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et Caipha : factum est verbum Domini super Joannem, Zachariae filium, in deserto.
3 And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins;
Et venit in omnem regionem Jordanis, praedicans baptismum poenitentiae in remissionem peccatorum,
4 As it was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Isaiae prophetae : Vox clamantis in deserto : Parate viam Domini; rectas facite semitas ejus :
5 Every valley shall be filled; and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight; and the rough ways plain;
omnis vallis implebitur, et omnis mons, et collis humiliabitur : et erunt prava in directa, et aspera in vias planas :
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.

⁣And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
Exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis, abiit in montana cum festinatione, in civitatem Juda :
40 And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
et intravit in domum Zachariae, et salutavit Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Et factum est, ut audivit salutationem Mariae Elisabeth, exsultavit infans in utero ejus : et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth :
42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
et exclamavit voce magna, et dixit : Benedicta tu inter mulieres, et benedictus fructus ventris tui.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et unde hoc mihi, ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me?
44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuae in auribus meis, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo.
45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
Et beata, quae credidisti, quoniam perficientur ea, quae dicta sunt tibi a Domino.
46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
Et ait Maria : Magnificat anima mea Dominum :
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.

⁣Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
Thomas autem unus ex duodecim, qui dicitur Didymus, non erat cum eis quando venit Jesus.
⁠ 25 ⁠The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Dixerunt ergo ei alii discipuli : Vidimus Dominum. Ille autem dixit eis : Nisi videro in manibus ejus fixuram clavorum, et mittam digitum meum in locum clavorum, et mittam manum meam in latus ejus, non credam.
⁠ 26 ⁠And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be to you.
Et post dies octo, iterum erant discipuli ejus intus, et Thomas cum eis. Venit Jesus januis clausis, et stetit in medio, et dixit : Pax vobis.
⁠ 27 ⁠Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.
Deinde dicit Thomae : Infer digitum tuum huc, et vide manus meas, et affer manum tuam, et mitte in latus meum : et noli esse incredulus, sed fidelis.
⁠ 28 ⁠Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God.
Respondit Thomas, et dixit ei : Dominus meus et Deus meus.
⁠ 29 ⁠Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed.
Dixit ei Jesus : Quia vidisti me, Thoma, credidisti : beati qui non viderunt, et crediderunt.


In the Mass of St Thomas, the liturgy reminds us that the Apostles are the foundation of the church of which Christ is the corner-stone; that is why their feasts were formerly kept like Sundays.
The Gospel relates the famous scene which occurs in the Upper Room after the Lord's Resurrection. St Thomas doubted: and it was only when Jesus made him put his finger into his wounds that, passing suddenly from incredulity to ardent faith, he exclaimed: "My Lord and my God." That finger, says a Father of the Church, has become the master of the world because it showed him the reality of the flesh of Jesus Christ. Let us therefore believe in the great mystery of an incarnate Word which will soon be manifested in the world. The name of St Thomas figures in the Canon of the Mass.
The elevation having been instituted as a reply to the heresy of Berengarius who denied the real presence, let us contemplate in a spirit of faith the sacred elements when they are raised and say with St Thomas: "My Lord and my God, " a practice enriched by Pius X.

⁣And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

Et ait angelus ei : Ne timeas, Maria : invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum.
31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium, et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum :
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.
hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus : et regnabit in domo Jacob in aeternum,
33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
et regni ejus non erit finis.
34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?

35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Et respondens angelus dixit ei : Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te, et virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi. Ideoque et quod nascetur ex te sanctum, vocabitur Filius Dei.
36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
Et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua, et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua : et hic mensis sextus est illi, quae vocatur sterilis :
37 Because no word shall be impossible with God.

38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

20 And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.
Et confessus est, et non negavit, et confessus est : Quia non sum ego Christus.
21 And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.
Et interrogaverunt eum : Quid ergo? Elias es tu? Et dixit : Non sum. Propheta es tu? Et respondit : Non.
22 They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?

Et interrogaverunt eum, et dixerunt ei : Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non es Christus, neque Elias, neque propheta?
26 John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.
Respondit eis Joannes, dicens : Ego baptizo in aqua : medius autem vestrum stetit, quem vos nescitis.
27 The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.
Ipse est qui post me venturus est, qui ante me factus est : cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti.
28 These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
Haec in Bethania facta sunt trans Jordanem, ubi erat Joannes baptizans.

Bishop of Vercelli in Italy, St Eusebius was exiled to Egypt and Palestine by the Arians. The Church confers on him the title of Martyr, because there he suffered numerous persecutions at the hands of these heretics. His letters hold an important place in Latin literature. He died A.D. 371.

⁣The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

⁣St Damasus become pope in 366, after the persecutions were over. He condemned Arianism, commanded St Jerome to translate the Holy Scriptures into Latin, and composed inscriptions for the sepulchres of the Roman martyrs. He died A.D. 384.

Let us be filled with sentiments of hope and joy, for the coming of Jesus is nigh. Let us prepare the way in our hearts for the Messias: Our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ.

⁣And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves;

We learn in this Gospel the second coming of Christ: to render to each one according to his works.

From all eternity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit chose Mary to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate. It was unthinkable that she be defiled by sin, in any way or for the least second of time. Therefore, in the instant of creating Mary's person, the Trinity made her immaculate. This grace, like every other grace granted since the fall of Adam, was given her through the merits of Christ. She was truly saved, redeemed not from an evil already present, but from an evil that threatened.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

Ambrose was Roman governor of northern Italy and still a catachumen when a popular assembly chose him to be bishop of Milan in 374. He fearlessly resisted the encroachment of civil authorities and defended the Faith against contemporary heretics backed by successive Emperors. He was a great preacher. He is also responsible for the "Ambrosian Rite" still used in Milan. The most illustrious of his converts is St Augustine. According to ancient tradition when St Augustine was baptised, he and St Ambrose composed together the Te Deum, now the solemn hymn of thanksgiving of the universal church.

1 In the beginning God created heaven, and earth. 2 And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved over the waters. 3 And God said: Be light made. [6] "A firmament": By this name is here understood the whole space between the earth, and the highest stars. The lower part of which divideth the waters that are upon the earth, from those that are above in the clouds.

And it was so done. 12 And the earth brought forth the green herb, and such as yieldeth seed according to its kind, and the tree that beareth fruit, having seed each one according to its kind. [16] "Two great lights": God created on the first day, light, which being moved from east to west, by its rising and setting, made morning and evening. The moon, though much less than the stars, is here called a great light, from its giving a far greater light to the earth than any of them.
21 And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. [26] "Let us make man to our image": This image of God in man, is not in the body, but in the soul; which is a spiritual substance, endued with understanding and free will. God speaketh here in the plural number, to insinuate the plurality of persons in the Deity.
[28] "Increase and multiply": This is not a precept, as some Protestant controvertists would have it, but a blessing, rendering them fruitful; for God had said the same words to the fishes, and birds, (ver. 22) who were incapable of receiving a precept.
31 And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good. And the evening and morning were the sixth day.

⁣For even as a man going into a far country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods;
Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.
15 And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey.

The great popularity of St Nicholas in both the East and the West is proved by the numerous churches dedicated to him and the frequent use of Nicholas as a Christian name. Yet all we know for certain about him is that he was made archbishop of Myra in Asia Minor, where he died in the year 324 A.D. Many of the legends had to do with his abounding charity and extraordinary miracles, and particularly his Christ-like love for children, so that in Catholic countries he is said to make an annual visit on his feast day to bring presents to little ones.

The holy Bishop of Ravenna was one of the most eloquent preachers of the Church. He died at Imola A.D. 450.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro : quem qui invenit homo, abscondit, et prae gaudio illius vadit, et vendit universa quae habet, et emit agrum illum.
⁠ 45 ⁠Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls.
Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori, quaerenti bonas margaritas.
⁠ 46 ⁠Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit, et vendidit omnia quae habuit, et emit eam.
⁠ 47 ⁠Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes.

St Bibiana was martyred at Rome under Julian the Apostate A.D. 363.


Bibians's father Flavian had been prefect of the city of Rome. He and his wife were such fervent Christians that when the Emperor Julian left the Catholic Faith and began persecuting it, Flavian was arrested. He was branded on the face and exiled.
After he died, his good wife was made a prisoner in her house on account of her good Christian life. Then, she too was put to death.
Left alone with her sister, Demetria, Bibiana gave herself to confident prayer. Everything they had was taken. They were taken to court and Demetria dropped dead at the judge's feet. Bibiana was handed over to a sinful woman who was supposed to make the holy young girl as evil as she was.
The Saint could not be moved. She was brought back to court and beaten, yet she still held her faith and her purity.
She was put to death by being beaten with leaden scourges and her body was left to the mercy of fierce dogs. The dogs, however, did not touch it, and a priest buried it at night beside her mother and sister.

To remain pure in the midst of temptations we have to pray, make sacrifices and mortify our senses.

Et mittet angelos suos cum tuba, et voce magna : et congregabunt electos ejus a quatuor ventis, a summis caelorum usque ad terminos eorum.

Ab arbore autem fici discite parabolam : cum jam ramus ejus tener fuerit, et folia nata, scitis quia prope est aestas :

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.
Tunc simile erit regnum caelorum decem virginibus : quae accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsae.
⁠ 2 ⁠And five of them were foolish, and five wise.
Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuae, et quinque prudentes :
⁠ 3 ⁠But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them:
sed quinque fatuae, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :
⁠ 4 ⁠But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps.
prudentes vero acceperunt oleum in vasis suis cum lampadibus.
⁠ 5 ⁠And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept.
Moram autem faciente sponso, dormitaverunt omnes et dormierunt.
⁠ 6 ⁠And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him.
Media autem nocte clamor factus est : Ecce sponsus venit, exite obviam ei.
⁠ 7 ⁠Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
Tunc surrexerunt omnes virgines illae, et ornaverunt lampades suas.
⁠ 8 ⁠And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.
Fatuae autem sapientibus dixerunt : Date nobis de oleo vestro, quia lampades nostrae extinguuntur.
⁠ 9 ⁠The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
Responderunt prudentes, dicentes : Ne forte non sufficiat nobis, et vobis, ite potius ad vendentes, et emite vobis.
⁠ 10 ⁠Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.
Dum autem irent emere, venit sponsus : et quae paratae erant, intraverunt cum eo ad nuptias, et clausa est janua.
⁠ 11 ⁠But at last come also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us.
Novissime vero veniunt et reliquae virgines, dicentes : Domine, domine, aperi nobis.
⁠ 12 ⁠But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not.
At ille respondens, ait : Amen dico vobis, nescio vos.
⁠ 13 ⁠Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.
Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.


St Catherine, an illustrious virgin of Alexandria in Egypt, was famous for her learning. The emperor Maximian assembled learned men to bring her to the worship of idols, but they were converted to Christianity. Maximian then ordered her to be beheaded after many cruel torments A.D. 305.

⁣You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
Vos estis sal terrae. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? ad nihilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras, et conculcetur ab hominibus.
⁠ 14 ⁠You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita,
⁠ 15 ⁠Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
neque accedunt lucernam, et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt.
⁠ 16 ⁠So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus : ut videant opera vestra bona, et glorificent Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est.
⁠ 17 ⁠Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem, aut prophetas : non veni solvere, sed adimplere.
⁠ 18 ⁠For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.
⁠ 19 ⁠He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis, et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum : qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regno caelorum.


St John of the Cross was the fellow worker of St Teresa in the reform of the Order of Mt Carmel. A poet, he wrote invaluable treatises on mystical theology. He died A.D. 1591.

13 ⁣And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?
Venit autem Jesus in partes Caesareae Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?

Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
⁠ 17 ⁠And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Beatus es Simon Bar Jona : quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in caelis est.
⁠ 18 ⁠And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
⁠ 19 ⁠And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.


St Clement I, was a companion and disciple of SS Peter and Paul, and the third successor of St. Peter. He was exiled by the emperor Trajan and cast into the sea A.D. 100.
