And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?
Venit autem Jesus in partes Caesareae Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?
14 But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
At illi dixerunt : Alii Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Jeremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.
15 Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?
Dicit illis Jesus : Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?
16 Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.
Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Beatus es Simon Bar Jona : quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in caelis est.
18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.
St Damasus become pope in 366, after the persecutions were over. He condemned Arianism, commanded St Jerome to translate the Holy Scriptures into Latin, and composed inscriptions for the sepulchres of the Roman martyrs. He died A.D. 384.
Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:
Joannes autem cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens duos de discipulis suis,
3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?
ait illi : Tu es, qui venturus es, an alium exspectamus?
4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.
Et respondens Jesus ait illis : Euntes renuntiate Joanni quae audistis, et vidistis.
5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Caeci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur :
6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.
7 And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?
Illis autem abeuntibus, coepit Jesus dicere ad turbas de Joanne : Quid existis in desertum videre? arundinem vento agitatem?
8 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.
Sed quid existis videre? hominem mollibus vestitum? Ecce qui mollibus vestiuntur, in domibus regum sunt.
9 But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.
Sed quid existis videre? prophetam? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.
10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
Hic est enim de quo scriptum est : Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui praeparabit viam tuam ante te.
Let us be filled with sentiments of hope and joy, for the coming of Jesus is nigh. Let us prepare the way in our hearts for the Messias: Our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ.
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves;
Et erunt signa in sole, et luna, et stellis, et in terris pressura gentium prae confusione sonitus maris, et fluctuum :
26 Men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of heaven shall be moved;
arescentibus hominibus prae timore, et exspectatione, quae supervenient universo orbi : nam virtutes caelorum movebuntur :
27 And then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with great power and majesty.
et tunc videbunt Filium hominis venientem in nube cum potestate magna et majestate.
28 But when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.
His autem fieri incipientibus, respicite, et levate capita vestra : quoniam appropinquat redemptio vestra.
29 And he spoke to them in a similitude. See the fig tree, and all the trees:
Et dixit illis similitudinem : Videte ficulneam, et omnes arbores :
30 When they now shoot forth their fruit, you know that summer is nigh;
cum producunt jam ex se fructum, scitis quoniam prope est aestas.
31 So you also, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is at hand.
Ita et vos cum videritis haec fieri, scitote quoniam prope est regnum Dei.
32 Amen, I say to you, this generation shall not pass away, till all things be fulfilled.
Amen dico vobis, quia non praeteribit generatio haec, donec omnia fiant.
33 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Caelum et terra transibunt : verba autem mea non transibunt.
We learn in this Gospel the second coming of Christ: to render to each one according to his works.
And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David : et nomen virginis Maria.
28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit : Ave gratia plena : Dominus tecum : benedicta tu in mulieribus.
From all eternity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit chose Mary to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate. It was unthinkable that she be defiled by sin, in any way or for the least second of time. Therefore, in the instant of creating Mary's person, the Trinity made her immaculate. This grace, like every other grace granted since the fall of Adam, was given her through the merits of Christ. She was truly saved, redeemed not from an evil already present, but from an evil that threatened.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
Vos estis sal terrae. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? ad nihilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras, et conculcetur ab hominibus.
14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita,
15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
neque accedunt lucernam, et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt.
16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus : ut videant opera vestra bona, et glorificent Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est.
17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem, aut prophetas : non veni solvere, sed adimplere.
18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.
19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis, et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum : qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regno caelorum.
Ambrose was Roman governor of northern Italy and still a catachumen when a popular assembly chose him to be bishop of Milan in 374. He fearlessly resisted the encroachment of civil authorities and defended the Faith against contemporary heretics backed by successive Emperors. He was a great preacher. He is also responsible for the "Ambrosian Rite" still used in Milan. The most illustrious of his converts is St Augustine. According to ancient tradition when St Augustine was baptised, he and St Ambrose composed together the Te Deum, now the solemn hymn of thanksgiving of the universal church.
Genesis Chapter 1
God createth Heaven and Earth, and all things therein, in six days.
1 In the beginning God created heaven, and earth. 2 And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved over the waters. 3 And God said: Be light made. And light was made. 4 And God saw the light that it was good; and he divided the light from the darkness. 5 And he called the light Day, and the darkness Night; and there was evening and morning one day.
6 And God said: Let there be a firmament made amidst the waters: and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made a firmament, and divided the waters that were under the firmament, from those that were above the firmament, and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament, Heaven; and the evening and morning were the second day. 9 God also said: Let the waters that are under the heaven, be gathered together into one place: and let the dry land appear. And it was so done. 10 And God called the dry land, Earth; and the gathering together of the waters, he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
[6] "A firmament": By this name is here understood the whole space between the earth, and the highest stars. The lower part of which divideth the waters that are upon the earth, from those that are above in the clouds.
11 And he said: Let the earth bring forth the green herb, and such as may seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in itself upon the earth. And it was so done. 12 And the earth brought forth the green herb, and such as yieldeth seed according to its kind, and the tree that beareth fruit, having seed each one according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 And God said: Let there be lights made in the firmament of heaven, to divide the day and the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years: 15 To shine in the firmament of heaven, and to give light upon the earth. And it was so done.
16 And God made two great lights: a greater light to rule the day; and a lesser light to rule the night: and the stars. 17 And he set them in the firmament of heaven to shine upon the earth. 18 And to rule the day and the night, and to divide the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and morning were the fourth day. 20 God also said: Let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life, and the fowl that may fly over the earth under the firmament of heaven.
[16] "Two great lights": God created on the first day, light, which being moved from east to west, by its rising and setting, made morning and evening. But on the fourth day he ordered and distributed this light, and made the sun, moon, and stars. The moon, though much less than the stars, is here called a great light, from its giving a far greater light to the earth than any of them.
21 And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And he blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the waters of the sea: and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth. 23 And the evening and morning were the fifth day. 24 And God said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature in its kind, cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth, according to their kinds. And it was so done. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and cattle, and every thing that creepeth on the earth after its kind. And God saw that it was good.
26 And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth. 27 And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth. 29 And God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your meat: 30 And to all beasts of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to all that move upon the earth, and wherein there is life, that they may have to feed upon. And it was so done.
[26] "Let us make man to our image": This image of God in man, is not in the body, but in the soul; which is a spiritual substance, endued with understanding and free will. God speaketh here in the plural number, to insinuate the plurality of persons in the Deity.
[28] "Increase and multiply": This is not a precept, as some Protestant controvertists would have it, but a blessing, rendering them fruitful; for God had said the same words to the fishes, and birds, (ver. 22) who were incapable of receiving a precept.
31 And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good. And the evening and morning were the sixth day.
For even as a man going into a far country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods;
Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.
15 And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey.
Et uni dedit quinque talenta, alii autem duo, alii vero unum, unicuique secundum propriam virtutem : et profectus est statim.
16 And he that had received the five talents, went his way, and traded with the same, and gained other five.
Abiit autem qui quinque talenta acceperat, et operatus est in eis, et lucratus est alia quinque.
17 And in like manner he that had received the two, gained other two.
Similiter et qui duo acceperat, lucratus est alia duo.
18 But he that had received the one, going his way digged into the earth, and hid his lord's money.
Qui autem unum acceperat, abiens fodit in terram, et abscondit pecuniam domini sui.
19 But after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reckoned with them.
Post multum vero temporis venit dominus servorum illorum, et posuit rationem cum eis.
20 And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents, behold I have gained other five over and above.
Et accedens qui quinque talenta acceperat, obtulit alia quinque talenta, dicens : Domine, quinque talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia quinque superlucratus sum.
21 His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam; intra in gaudium domini tui.

The great popularity of St Nicholas in both the East and the West is proved by the numerous churches dedicated to him and the frequent use of Nicholas as a Christian name. Yet all we know for certain about him is that he was made archbishop of Myra in Asia Minor, where he died in the year 324 A.D. Many of the legends had to do with his abounding charity and extraordinary miracles, and particularly his Christ-like love for children, so that in Catholic countries he is said to make an annual visit on his feast day to bring presents to little ones.

The holy Bishop of Ravenna was one of the most eloquent preachers of the Church. He died at Imola A.D. 450.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro : quem qui invenit homo, abscondit, et prae gaudio illius vadit, et vendit universa quae habet, et emit agrum illum.
45 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls.
Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori, quaerenti bonas margaritas.
46 Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit, et vendidit omnia quae habuit, et emit eam.
47 Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes.
Iterum simile est regnum caelorum sagenae missae in mare, et ex omni genere piscium congreganti.
48 Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth.
Quam, cum impleta esset, educentes, et secus littus sedentes, elegerunt bonis in vasa, malos autem foras miserunt.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just.
Sic erit in consummatione saeculi : exibunt angeli, et separabunt malos de medio justorum,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
et mittent eos in caminum ignis : ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
51 Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes.
Intellexistis haec omnia? Dicunt ei : Etiam.
52 He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.
Ait illis : Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum, similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera.
St Bibiana was martyred at Rome under Julian the Apostate A.D. 363.
Bibians's father Flavian had been prefect of the city of Rome. He and his wife were such fervent Christians that when the Emperor Julian left the Catholic Faith and began persecuting it, Flavian was arrested. He was branded on the face and exiled.
After he died, his good wife was made a prisoner in her house on account of her good Christian life. Then, she too was put to death.
Left alone with her sister, Demetria, Bibiana gave herself to confident prayer. Everything they had was taken. They were taken to court and Demetria dropped dead at the judge's feet. Bibiana was handed over to a sinful woman who was supposed to make the holy young girl as evil as she was.
The Saint could not be moved. She was brought back to court and beaten, yet she still held her faith and her purity.
She was put to death by being beaten with leaden scourges and her body was left to the mercy of fierce dogs. The dogs, however, did not touch it, and a priest buried it at night beside her mother and sister.
To remain pure in the midst of temptations we have to pray, make sacrifices and mortify our senses.

But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom, shall be preached in the whole world, for a testimony to all nations, and then shall the consummation come. 15 When therefore you shall see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place: he that readeth let him understand.
16 Then they that are in Judea, let them flee to the mountains: 17 And he that is on the housetop, let him not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 And he that is in the field, let him not go back to take his coat. 19 And woe to them that are with child, and that give suck in those days. 20 But pray that your flight be not in the winter, or on the sabbath.

St Catherine, an illustrious virgin of Alexandria in Egypt, was famous for her learning. The emperor Maximian assembled learned men to bring her to the worship of idols, but they were converted to Christianity. Maximian then ordered her to be beheaded after many cruel torments A.D. 305.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.

St Gregory Thaumaturgus (the Wonderworker) was Bishop of Neo-Cesarea, his native city, in Pontus. He died famous for his missionary labors A.D. 276.
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.

2 And five of them were foolish, and five wise.

3 But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them:

10 Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.

St Gertrude, born 1256 in Germany, was a Benedictine abbess celebrated for her revelations concerning the Sacred Heart. Her writings are very important for mystical theology. She died A.D. 1334.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

St Albert was a famous member of the Order of Preachers, noted for his universal learning, and apostolic zeal and devotion. He had for his pupil the celebrated St Thomas Aquinas of the same order, and left numerous writings. He became bishop of Ratisbonne, and died A.D. 1280, being canonized and declared Doctor of the Church in 1931.

12 But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep:
Mercenarius autem, et qui non est pastor, cujus non sunt oves propriae, videt lupum venientem, et dimittit oves, et fugit : et lupus rapit, et dispergit oves;
13 And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath no care for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me.

St Josaphat, a monk of the order of St Basil and afterward Archbishop of Polatsk, laboured for the reunion of the Greek Church with the Church of Rome. He was murdered by his enemies in A.D. 1623.
At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.

26 Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.

Frances Xavier Cabrini, also called Mother Cabrini, was an Italian-American religious sister. A schoolteacher, she was asked by her bishop to become a missionary. She formed a community of sisters and in 1187 Mother Cabrini and her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were asked by Pope Leo XIII to travel to the US to serve Italian immigrants. She traveled through the US and Latin and South America opening schools and hospitals. She died on Dec 12, 1907 while wrapping Christmas gifts for immigrant children. First US citizen to be honored as a saint.

25 But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way.

26 And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle.
Cum autem crevisset herba, et fructum fecisset, tunc apparuerunt et zizania.
27 And the servants of the goodman of the house coming said to him: Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it cockle?
Accedentes autem servi patrisfamilias, dixerunt ei : Domine, nonne bonum semen seminasti in agro tuo? unde ergo habet zizania?
28 And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up?
Et ait illis : Inimicus homo hoc fecit. Servi autem dixerunt ei : Vis, imus, et colligimus ea?
29 And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it.
Et ait : Non : ne forte colligentes zizania, eradicetis simul cum eis et triticum.
30 Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.
Sinite utraque crescere usque ad messem, et in tempore messis dicam messoribus : Colligite primum zizania, et alligate ea in fasciculos ad comburendum : triticum autem congregate in horreum meum.
The evil sower is the devil, and he sows the dark cockle, which is violent poison. The servants of the goodman of the house represent the Angels; they wished to separate the good from the bad. But it is impossible to separate them until the time of harvest, i.e., the time of the last judgement; then will Divine Justice make the necessary separation.
No man lighteth a candle, and putteth it in a hidden place, nor under a bushel; but upon a candlestick, that they that come in, may see the light.
Nemo lucernam accendit, et in abscondito ponit, neque sub modio : sed supra candelabrum, ut qui ingrediuntur, lumen videant.
34 The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome.
Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. Si oculus tuus fuerit simplex, totum corpus tuum lucidum erit : si autem nequam fuerit, etiam corpus tuum tenebrosum erit.
35 Take heed therefore, that the light which is in thee, be not darkness.
Vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est, tenebrae sint.
36 If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness; the whole shall be lightsome; and as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee.
Si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit, non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum, erit lucidum totum, et sicut lucerna fulgoris illuminabit te.
St Martin, Bishop of Tours in France, was at first a soldier, then a monk under the direction of St. Hilary. Famous through his boundless charity to the poor he died A.D. 397.
Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.
Sint lumbi vestri praecincti, et lucernae ardentes in manibus vestris,
36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.
Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam.
40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.
Et vos estote parati : quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet.
The holy priest Andrew was first a member of the ecclesiastical court of Naples. He entered the congregation of Clerks Regular called the Theatine Order. He died at the foot of the altar, while saying "Introibo ad altare Dei." (I will go up to the altar of God) A.D. 1608.

The Mother and Mistress of all Churches throughout the world, the Church of Saint John Lateran, or the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour, was the first publicly consecrated. It was built by Constantine, the first Christian Emperor and consecrated by Pope St Sylvester on November 9, A.D. 324.
As he was speaking these things unto them, behold a certain ruler came up, and adored him, saying: Lord, my daughter is even now dead; but come, lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

21 For she said within herself: If I shall touch only his garment, I shall be healed.
Dicebat enim intra se : Si tetigero tantum vestimentum ejus, salva ero.
22 But Jesus turning and seeing her, said: Be of good heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
At Jesus conversus, et videns eam, dixit : Confide, filia, fides tua te salvam fecit. Et salva facta est mulier ex illa hora.
