Date – Friday, August 4th, 2023 – St. Dominic

1. St. Dominic was born around 1170 in Calaroga, Spain, to noble parents, Felix Guzman and Joanna of Aza. He came from a family of saints, with his brothers Antonio and Manes also exhibiting extraordinary sanctity.

2. Dominic received his education at the University of Palencia, where he excelled as a student and demonstrated seriousness and austerity amid the worldly environment.

3. In 1203, Dominic and his companion were sent by the Bishop of Osma on a diplomatic mission, during which they encountered the Albigensian heresy in Languedoc, leaving a deep impression on Dominic's mind.

4. Upon the assassination of Pierre de Castelnau in 1208, a crusade against the Albigenses was launched, and Dominic participated in this mission to combat heresy and promote the Gospel.

5. In 1215, Saint Dominic sought approval for his envisioned religious order during the Fourth Lateran Council. The council rejected the institution of new orders but allowed Dominic and his followers to adopt the rule of St. Augustine.

6. On December 22, 1216, Pope Honorius III confirmed the Order of Preachers (Dominican Order), granting it papal approval and empowering Dominic as the Master General.

7. Dominic and his brethren spread the Order throughout Europe, establishing monasteries and houses in various cities like Paris, Bologna, Viterbo, and others.

8. In 1220, Dominic established a monastery at Prouille, France, which served as the first Dominican convent, dedicated to the formation and protection of women against the influence of heresy.

9. During his lifetime, St. Dominic played a crucial role in combating heresy, reconciling heretics, and converting many. His reputation for holiness, learning, and apostolic zeal drew numerous disciples to follow him.

10. St. Dominic's death occurred on August 6, 1221, in Bologna, Italy, after a brief illness. His remarkable achievements, miracles, and dedication to the propagation of the true faith led to his canonization in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX, who compared his sanctity to that of Saints Peter and Paul.

St. Dominic, pray for us!
