Pious tradition states that a Poor Clare appeared to one of her fellow sistren stating this prayer allowed her to expiate sins while still living. This may be a good aid, but is no replacement for the sacrament of Confession and the penances given therefrom.
This prayer is recited three times in the day - at 6 am, noon, and 6 pm. It is usually recited kneeling save Saturday evenings, and all day Sunday when one is standing. When standing, genuflect at "Et verbum... ". In addition, this prayer is not said in Paschaltide when it is reached by the Regina Caeli.

The "Anima Christi" prayer is a Catholic prayer to Jesus of medieval origin. It is believed to have been composed by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, as he puts it at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises and often refers to it. The original Latin version of the prayer is: "Anima Christi, sanctifica me. Corpus Christi, salva me. Sanguis Christi, inebria me. Aqua lateris Christi, lava me. Passio Christi, conforta me. O bone Jesu, exaudi me. Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Ne permittas me separari a te. Ab hoste maligno defende me. In hora mortis meae voca me. Amen."
