⁣These things Jesus spoke, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said: Father, the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee.

7 Now they have known, that all things which thou hast given me, are from thee:

8 Because the words which thou gavest me, I have given to them; and they have received them, and have known in very deed that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them whom thou hast given me: because they are thine:

10 And all my things are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
et mea omnia tua sunt, et tua mea sunt : et clarificatus sum in eis.
11 And now I am not in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name whom thou has given me; that they may be one, as we also are.

St Stanislaus, patron of Poland, reproached king Boleslaus the Cruel, for his dissolute life, and while saying Mass, was put to death by him. A.D. 1079.

⁣And it came to pass afterwards, that he went into a city that is called Naim; and there went with him his disciples, and a great multitude.

St Monica first converted her pagan husband, and then, by her tears and unceasing prayers, her son St Augustine, who is regarded as one of the greatest Doctors of the Western Church. She died A.D. 387.

And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

⁠ 2 ⁠This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him.

After the victory gained by Constantine by virtue of the Cross which appeared to him in the skies, and whose sign he reproduced in the Laborum, St Helena, his mother, went to Jerusalem to try to find the true Cross. At the beginning of the second century Hadrian had covered Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre under a terrace of 300 feet in length, on which had been erected a statue of Jupiter and a temple of Venus. The Empress razed them to the ground, and, in digging up the soil, they discovered the nails (Allelluia) and the glorious trophy to which we owe "life, salvation and resurrection" (Introit). The miraculous cure of a woman authenticated the sacred tree .

And when they shall persecute you in this city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you shall not finish all the cities of Israel, till the Son of man come.

Bishop of Alexandria, St Athanasius opposed Arius with admirable zeal. He has left us serveral works in his defense of the divinity of Christ. He suffered frequest persecution. He died A.D. 373.

⁣And coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so that they wondered and said: How came this man by this wisdom and miracles?

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.

⁠ 13 ⁠Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.
Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.


St Catherine of the Order of St Dominic, led a life of great penance. She received the stigmata, but at her urgent prayer they did not show externally; she died A.D. 1380.

St Peter of Verona was a famous preacher of the Dominican Order. From childhood he was conspicuous for his refutation of heretics and his singular innocense. He longed to die for the faith, and his prayer was heard. A.D. 1252.

⁣But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou?

8 And when he is come, he will convict the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment.

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

Peter Kanis, born at Nijmegen in Holland, after brilliant studies at Cologne and Louvain, entered the company of Jesus, of which he is one of the chief glories. The wisdom of his controversy, his eloquent preaching, his instructive writings (for example the first Catechism) caused him to be called the Hammer of Protestantism. He died at Fribourg in Switzerland. A.D. 1597.

And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?

⁠ 18 ⁠And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

⁠ 19 ⁠And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.


St Cletus, the third pope, was martyred under Domitian A.D. 91. St Marcellinus was beheaded under Diocletian A.D. 304.

And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.

St Mark was a disciple of St Peter and the author of the second Gospel under the inspiration of the latter. He was martyred at Alexandria A.D. 80.

I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman.

St Fidelis was at first the "Advocate of the poor". He then entered the Order of Friar Minors, preached the Word of God, and was stabbed to death by Protestant soldiers A.D. 1622.

19 And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me?
Cognovit autem Jesus, quia volebant eum interrogare, et dixit eis : De hoc quaeritis inter vos quia dixi : Modicum, et non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me.
20 Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Amen, amen dico vobis : quia plorabitis, et flebitis vos, mundus autem gaudebit; vos autem contristabimini, sed tristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.
21 A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22 So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.

St Soter was martyred in the second century under Marcus Aurelius A.D. 174, and St Caius was put to death A.D. 296.

⁣I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.

12 But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep:
Mercenarius autem, et qui non est pastor, cujus non sunt oves propriae, videt lupum venientem, et dimittit oves, et fugit : et lupus rapit, et dispergit oves;
13 And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath no care for the sheep.
mercenarius autem fugit, quia mercenarius est, et non pertinet ad eum de ovibus.
14 I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me.
Ego sum pastor bonus : et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meae.
15 As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep.
