⁣These things Jesus spoke, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said: Father, the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee.

St Stanislaus, patron of Poland, reproached king Boleslaus the Cruel, for his dissolute life, and while saying Mass, was put to death by him. A.D. 1079.

St Monica first converted her pagan husband, and then, by her tears and unceasing prayers, her son St Augustine, who is regarded as one of the greatest Doctors of the Western Church. She died A.D. 387.

And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

After the victory gained by Constantine by virtue of the Cross which appeared to him in the skies, and whose sign he reproduced in the Laborum, St Helena, his mother, went to Jerusalem to try to find the true Cross. At the beginning of the second century Hadrian had covered Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre under a terrace of 300 feet in length, on which had been erected a statue of Jupiter and a temple of Venus. The Empress razed them to the ground, and, in digging up the soil, they discovered the nails (Allelluia) and the glorious trophy to which we owe "life, salvation and resurrection" (Introit). The miraculous cure of a woman authenticated the sacred tree .

And when they shall persecute you in this city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you shall not finish all the cities of Israel, till the Son of man come.

⁠ 24 ⁠The disciple is not above the master, nor the servant above his lord.

⁠ 25 ⁠It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the goodman of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household?

Bishop of Alexandria, St Athanasius opposed Arius with admirable zeal. He has left us serveral works in his defense of the divinity of Christ. He suffered frequest persecution. He died A.D. 373.

⁣And coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so that they wondered and said: How came this man by this wisdom and miracles?

St Catherine of the Order of St Dominic, led a life of great penance. She received the stigmata, but at her urgent prayer they did not show externally; she died A.D. 1380.

St Peter of Verona was a famous preacher of the Dominican Order. From childhood he was conspicuous for his refutation of heretics and his singular innocense. He longed to die for the faith, and his prayer was heard. A.D. 1252.

⁣But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou?
Haec autem vobis ab initio non dixi, quia vobiscum eram. Et nunc vado ad eum qui misit me; et nemo ex vobis interrogat me : Quo vadis?
6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

Peter Kanis, born at Nijmegen in Holland, after brilliant studies at Cologne and Louvain, entered the company of Jesus, of which he is one of the chief glories. The wisdom of his controversy, his eloquent preaching, his instructive writings (for example the first Catechism) caused him to be called the Hammer of Protestantism. He died at Fribourg in Switzerland. A.D. 1597.

⁠ 14 ⁠But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

⁠ 15 ⁠Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?

⁠ 17 ⁠And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

⁠ 18 ⁠And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
⁠ 19 ⁠And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.


St Cletus, the third pope, was martyred under Domitian A.D. 91. St Marcellinus was beheaded under Diocletian A.D. 304.

And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.
Post haec autem designavit Dominus et alios septuaginta duos : et misit illos binos ante faciem suam in omnem civitatem et locum, quo erat ipse venturus.
⁠ 2 ⁠And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.
Et dicebat illis : Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci. Rogate ergo dominum messis ut mittat operarios in messem suam.
⁠ 3 ⁠Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.
Ite : ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos.
⁠ 4 ⁠Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.
Nolite portare sacculum, neque peram, neque calceamenta, et neminem per viam salutaveritis.
⁠ 5 ⁠Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.
In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primum dicite : Pax huic domui :
⁠ 6 ⁠And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.
et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet super illum pax vestra : sin autem, ad vos revertetur.
⁠ 7 ⁠And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.
In eadem autem domo manete, edentes et bibentes quae apud illos sunt : dignus est enim operarius mercede sua. Nolite transire de domo in domum.
⁠ 8 ⁠And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
Et in quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate quae apponuntur vobis :
⁠ 9 ⁠And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
et curate infirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis : Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei.




St Mark was a disciple of St Peter and the author of the second Gospel under the inspiration of the latter. He was martyred at Alexandria A.D. 80.

I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman.

⁠ 2 ⁠Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Omnem palmitem in me non ferentem fructum, tollet eum, et omnem qui fert fructum, purgabit eum, ut fructum plus afferat.
⁠ 3 ⁠Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you.
Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis.
⁠ 4 ⁠Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me.
Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest fere fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis.
⁠ 5 ⁠I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.
Ego sum vitis, vos palmites : qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere.
⁠ 6 ⁠If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth.
Si quis in me non manserit, mittetur foras sicut palmes, et arescet, et colligent eum, et in ignem mittent, et ardet.
⁠ 7 ⁠If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you.
Si manseritis in me, et verba mea in vobis manserint, quodcumque volueritis petetis, et fiet vobis.


St Fidelis was at first the "Advocate of the poor". He then entered the Order of Friar Minors, preached the Word of God, and was stabbed to death by Protestant soldiers A.D. 1622.

⁣A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father.

17 Then some of the disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father?

18 They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh.

19 And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me?
Cognovit autem Jesus, quia volebant eum interrogare, et dixit eis : De hoc quaeritis inter vos quia dixi : Modicum, et non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me.
20 Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Amen, amen dico vobis : quia plorabitis, et flebitis vos, mundus autem gaudebit; vos autem contristabimini, sed tristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.
21 A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
Mulier cum parit, tristitiam habet, quia venit hora ejus; cum autem pepererit puerum, jam non meminit pressurae propter gaudium, quia natus est homo in mundum.
22 So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.
Et vos igitur nunc quidem tristitiam habetis, iterum autem videbo vos, et gaudebit cor vestrum : et gaudium vestrum nemo tollet a vobis.

And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?

St Soter was martyred in the second century under Marcus Aurelius A.D. 174, and St Caius was put to death A.D. 296.

26 When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.
Cum vidisset ergo Jesus matrem, et discipulum stantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri suae : Mulier, ecce filius tuus.
27 After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.
Deinde dicit discipulo : Ecce mater tua. Et ex illa hora accepit eam discipulus in sua.

⁣I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.
Ego sum pastor bonus. Bonus pastor animam suam dat pro ovibus suis.
12 But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep:
Mercenarius autem, et qui non est pastor, cujus non sunt oves propriae, videt lupum venientem, et dimittit oves, et fugit : et lupus rapit, et dispergit oves;
13 And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath no care for the sheep.
mercenarius autem fugit, quia mercenarius est, et non pertinet ad eum de ovibus.
14 I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me.
Ego sum pastor bonus : et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meae.
15 As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep.
Sicut novit me Pater, et ego agnosco Patrem : et animam meam pono pro ovibus meis.
16 And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.
Et alias oves habeo, quae non sunt ex hoc ovili : et illas oportet me adducere, et vocem meam audient, et fiet unum ovile et unus pastor.
