⁣The resonance that occurs in polyphonic pieces of sacred music, most especially as they conclude, is analogous to how God works with us in this life. He speaks to us in a variety of ways and voices (heard on both the outside and inside of the soul) such that when they all harmonize, we are struck by the resonance. It causes our souls to be thrilled at the sound... even to melt as the Canticle of Canticles puts it: "My soul melted when He spoke" (5:6). To make this harmony and resonance possible, more than one voice is required. If only one voice is heard, we must be patient to see if others speak up to chime in and bring the desired resonance. If, however, a dissonant voice is heard, we must resist it and wait for God resolve it in due time without adding any additional discord ourselves.
