The Nativity Scene
But realize that the nativity scene should not be confused with some Currier and Ives or Thomas Kinkade cozy wintry paintings or some Nat King Cole smoothly sung holiday hit. What Child is this in the nativity scene…what Child has been born for us? This is the birth of a Victim…a Divine Victim for the sins of men. It is the birth of the only Child born for the purpose of dying. You know, I recently saw a nativity scene during the last few days of Advent while I was in Munich, Germany. The scene showed Joseph and Mary kneeling before an empty manger awaiting the Birth of the Lord. Right next to the manger, however, was a lamb…an innocent lamb…the Angus Dei…with its four legs tied up together. The shadow of the cross hangs over the nativity scene. Ecce Agnus Dei…Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world…Behold the High Priest of an eternal covenant Who offers Himself as the Sacrifice to satisfy the demands of Divine Justice and to appease the just wrath of the Heavenly Father. This is the Lamb that has been slain from the foundation of the world…the Lamb promised from the Book of Genesis…the Lamb that will conquer as seen in the Book of Revelation…the Alpha Lamb and the Omega Lamb. Let us praise and adore and thank this willing Victim in our Nativity Scene. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through. The cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh. The Babe, the Son of Mary.
