⁣Baptism is the plank by which we leave the kingdom of this world and enter upon the Ship, the Barque of St. Peter, that is, Holy Roman Catholic Church which takes us to the heavenly shore. This is why the effect of Baptism (i.e., incorporation into the Mystical Body of Christ) is absolutely necessary for salvation. And this is why our baptismal vows take the form of rejecting the glamour of this world and its overlord… Satan, while professing belief in God and all the tenets of the Creed. Thus, St. Paul in the Lesson today: “One Body and one Spirit… One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father… Who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen.” This spiritual birth can only happen once, just as we can only be born into this world once. There is only ONE Baptism, and it can only be applied ONCE. But what happens if we jump ship? What happens if we fall out by committing a mortal sin? We need to be rescued… offered a second chance… a second plank to enter once again on to the Ship heading to the celestial shore of heaven. Thus, St. Jerome says, the Sacrament of “Penance is a second plank after shipwreck” ((Ep. cxxx), cf. ST III, 84, 6).
