Immaculate Conception: The famous Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck (d. 1441) captured many thought provoking truths of our holy faith in his painting of the Annunciation. You can look at the painting in close detail here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/w....ikipedia/commons/6/6
This sermon attempts to show how these truths present in this painting are very edifying as well as helpful to us in understanding the need for the Immaculate Conception. She was the only one able to usher in the Incarnation, making it possible to restore all things in Christ. She succeeded where so many others had failed. We also see that by consecrating ourselves to her, we will (i) share in her power over the occult forces that are seeking to dominate the world, and (2) share with her the Lord’s victories, prefigured in the Old Testament. St. John the Baptist was martyred by adulterers. Because of his adultery with Herodias, they all became examples of corruption, poster children for the seven deadly sins. What does this say of the upcoming debate on giving Holy Communion to the divorced and remarried? If we approve of their sins, regardless of human compassion for their trials, we will only set them and others led astray by their example on the track of adding sin upon sin until they too become like Herod and his followers—corrupt and causing corruption. Quinquagesima Sunday: February 14th is the Feast of the great Catholic martyr and priest, St. Valentine. His persecutor, known to history as Claudius II, not only hated Catholicism, but also forbade his own Roman soldiers to marry. St. Valentine performed secret nuptial Masses for those Catholic soldiers that had found a spouse. The priest, Valentine, was arrested, beaten with clubs, and eventually beheaded. A number of men have said that life is not worth living unless there is something worth dying for. When one is truly in love with another, he is willing to suffer and even die for his beloved. Martyrdom requires a special grace from heaven. But in addition to this grace, the would be martyr ought to have trained for the moment. He ought to have prepared himself with certain exercises that formed him to be a spiritual athlete ready to face the enemy. Lent provides this time of exercise that prepares us to be martyrs...witnesses for Christ. For more please visit http://reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

“The observance of Lent is the very badge of the Christian warfare. By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of Christ. By it we avert the scourges of divine justice. By it we gain strength against the princes of darkness, for it shields us with heavenly help. Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it would be a detriment to God's glory, a disgrace to the Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls. Neither can it be doubted that such negligence would become the source of misery to the world, of public calamity, and of private woe.”—Pope Benedict XIV

The resonance that occurs in polyphonic pieces of sacred music, most especially as they conclude, is analogous to how God works with us in this life. He speaks to us in a variety of ways and voices (heard on both the outside and inside of the soul) such that when they all harmonize, we are struck by the resonance. It causes our souls to be thrilled at the sound... even to melt as the Canticle of Canticles puts it: "My soul melted when He spoke" (5:6). To make this harmony and resonance possible, more than one voice is required. If only one voice is heard, we must be patient to see if others speak up to chime in and bring the desired resonance. If, however, a dissonant voice is heard, we must resist it and wait for God resolve it in due time without adding any additional discord ourselves. As the Book of Psalms states, Our Lady is the City of God. After the fall of Adam, the sinful human race was under the unjust control of Satan. The devil and his demonic armies gained victory after victory until it seemed that all the cities on earth were subject to his tyrannical rule. But there was one city that was free from his clutches. There was one city that resisted the devil’s advance...one outpost...one place of refuge...one city that always remained loyal to the Most High and was open and receptive to the coming Messiah. That Mystical City of God is the Blessed Mother. Our Lady is totally untouched by the stain of sin. She alone has fully crushed the devil under her heel. The walls of this city are impregnable. She is the inviolate one...a sealed fountain...an enclosed garden that allows access only to her Divine Spouse and to those who receive the grace to enter into the Mystical City of God and the Tower of David. Only one city...only one dwelling...attracted the Son of God and drew Him to this fallen world. Without Our Lady, the City of God, there would be no Christmas. “If the winds of temptation surge, if you run aground on the shoals of troubles, look to this star, call upon Mary! If you are tossed by the winds of pride or ambition or detraction or jealousy, look to this star, call upon Mary! If anger or greed or the allurements of the flesh dash against the boat of your mind, look to Mary! And if you are troubled by the enormity of your sins, confused by the foulness of your conscience, terrified by the horror of the Judgment, so that you begin to be swallowed up by the pit of sadness, the abyss of despair, think of Mary! In dangers, in straits, in perplexity, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let her name be always in your mouth and in your heart, and, if you would ask for and obtain the help of her prayers, do not forget the example of how she lived”—St. Bernard of Clairvaux
