Apart from obeying a precept of Mother Church, what is the purpose for attending Holy Mass? Christ lives in Heaven interceding for us principally by His sacrifice on Calvary. Holy Mass is the exact projection of this continual sacrifice. At Holy Mass, we are united to Christ. If temporal food gives life to the body, Heavenly Food gives gives life to the soul. For Mass and Holy Communion we must fix an intention at the Offertory; we must unite ourselves to the priest. The Catechism of the Council of Trent: "Holy Communion is an antidote for our daily faults." Our Lord wants to know what He can do for us. For the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome As Catholics, just as the Bible is our book, and was the canon of Scripture was decided on by the Catholic Church and the Holy Spirit, so too, devotion to the Mother of God is not really an option, and was simply assumed in the early Church, and even up until quite recently. The Protestant Revolution happened after 1500+ years of consistent, stable teaching and practice in regard to devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We have no reason to be on the defensive in regard to our reverence for and devotion to Our Lady. Not having a devotion to her is the anomaly. Living in the Bible Belt, it is easy to feel like we are on the defensive, but all we have to do is look at history, and Christianity in the world today to see that devotion to Mary was and is the norm, or 'default' position for a Christian. In the year 2003, judge Robert Bork wrote a treatise on the problems facing modern America, entitled: “Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline.” As the recent decision from the Supreme Court indicates, we are no longer slouching toward this detestable destination… but have indeed pulled into the station named Sodom and Gomorrah. We should not be surprised at this outcome as revolution always tends in this direction. Revolution is primarily a spoken word, flowing from the devil's mouth, and its grammar is LUST. To counteract this grammar, we need a solid spirituality even as we live in Sodom...and that spirituality is available. It loves virginity, celibacy, chastity... having purity of heart as its aim. With this spirituality, the Church will emerge victorious over this most revolutionary moment in time. Yet, the earth came to the aid of the Woman and absorbed this fetid water without it causing any harm. Ven.
