During the Christmas Octave, a sort of conference was presented in four sermons... These sermons cover why God became man, in Latin Cur Deus Homo.
We confess in the Creed that His Majesty, Christ Our Lord, came down from heaven propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem… on account of us men and our salvation… but the exact nature of the relationship between Christ’s coming among us and our salvation remains unspecified/undefined by the Church. This should not surprise us since the effects of original sin are manifold (wounding us in a number of ways such as ignorance, concupiscence, and malice), then we should expect the cure is most likely to be manifold as well. Fallen man must be healed; fallen man must be instructed; fallen man must offer reparation to God Whom he has offended. Thus, we find a number of ways in which the Scriptures and the Fathers/Doctors present the matter, reducible, it seems to seven ways: pedagogical, transactional/redemption, recapitulation, physical, sacrificial, satisfactory, and meritorious. Although we are mostly interested in the physical category at this time, due to the season of Christmas and some modern errors, let us nevertheless look into them all, even if only briefly. Note that there is to be expected some overlapping. In any case, St. Athanasius says about such things: “it is better to put the same thing in several ways than to run the risk of leaving something out” (de Incarnatione, ch. IV, §20).

1st Sunday of Advent: We are living in a time in which the zealous priest, parent and teacher resemble the heroic Fr. Thomas Conway and Marine Captain Edward Parke. These men swam nearly continuously for a number of days seeking to preserve as many of the USS Indianapolis shipwrecked sailors as possible. This huge ship went down very quickly in late July of 1945, leaving most of the survivors to float on the open ocean for four days before being rescued. Of the 900 that escaped the ship alive, only 316 sailors lived, thanks in a large part to the efforts of these two men, who died of exhaustion in their efforts. The navy men were harassed by sharks, extreme thirst in an ocean full of toxic water, and easily gave way to hallucinations leading them to take off their lifejackets. Today, the sharks (i.e., devils) tempt us to drink deeply of the waters (i.e., the alluring draughts of electronic media flowing from the movies, internet, radio, etc... Often filled with lies, heresy, and lust-filled images) and give us many imaginings that all is well below the surface. Thus, many are tempted to drink or even take off their eternal life preserving garment (i.e., baptismal robe... being in a state of grace) to check things out. Yet, the only way to look up and lift up our heads—as Our Lord commands us to do in the Gospel as we await His Second Coming—is it to be always in a state of grace. The zealous priest, parent and teacher work hard, even unto wearing themselves out, ever trying to convince those under their care not to drink... and to keep on their eternal life preserving jackets. Let us be numbered among these good souls. For more please visit http://www.reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

6th Sunday after Pentecost: The 17th Century mystic Ven Mother Marianna of Jesus once saw a vision of Our Lord as a crucified boy on a mountain near Quito, Ecuador. He said to her: “I can do no more to show My love for you. Ungrateful souls, who repay the great love and attentions of My Heart with contempt, sacrileges and blasphemies.” St. Ephrem explains how God provided everything to our first parents in the Garden of Eden. Yet, even after they fell, St. Ephrem explains how God continued to provide them every opportunity to repent and come back...but they resisted! With the coming of Christ Our Lord, we too have everything needed to live a life of faith, hope and charity! We have no excuses. Yet, sadly, we too resist Him! In this sermon, you will hear a number of reasons we should not resist God ...and why we should never sin. May we always hate sin in the soul as much as our bodies hate death. As the Book of Psalms states, Our Lady is the City of God. After the fall of Adam, the sinful human race was under the unjust control of Satan. The devil and his demonic armies gained victory after victory until it seemed that all the cities on earth were subject to his tyrannical rule. But there was one city that was free from his clutches. There was one city that resisted the devil’s advance...one outpost...one place of refuge...one city that always remained loyal to the Most High and was open and receptive to the coming Messiah. That Mystical City of God is the Blessed Mother. Our Lady is totally untouched by the stain of sin. She alone has fully crushed the devil under her heel. The walls of this city are impregnable. She is the inviolate one...a sealed fountain...an enclosed garden that allows access only to her Divine Spouse and to those who receive the grace to enter into the Mystical City of God and the Tower of David. Only one city...only one dwelling...attracted the Son of God and drew Him to this fallen world. Without Our Lady, the City of God, there would be no Christmas. “If the winds of temptation surge, if you run aground on the shoals of troubles, look to this star, call upon Mary! If you are tossed by the winds of pride or ambition or detraction or jealousy, look to this star, call upon Mary! If anger or greed or the allurements of the flesh dash against the boat of your mind, look to Mary! And if you are troubled by the enormity of your sins, confused by the foulness of your conscience, terrified by the horror of the Judgment, so that you begin to be swallowed up by the pit of sadness, the abyss of despair, think of Mary! In dangers, in straits, in perplexity, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let her name be always in your mouth and in your heart, and, if you would ask for and obtain the help of her prayers, do not forget the example of how she lived”—St. Bernard of Clairvaux

In philosophy and theology, we often times learn about something we are interested in by looking at its opposite. This is called the via negativa. To learn more about the incredible reality of the Holy Mass, we should consider what is its most opposite which is arguably the so-called “black mass” of the Satanists. We strive to go Up in the true Mass, they strive to go down in their black mass. We have our Father above, they have their father below. We re-present the perfect prayer of His Majesty, Our Lord, on Calvary. They seek to make present again the third temptation of Christ in the desert. Willy nilly, the satanists show the world by their black masses where the true Mass and the True God can be found.

In one of his letters, St. Paul states that “all things are yours...and you are Christ’s.” At Baptism, we received a participation in the Divine Nature...a share in the Son-ship of Christ. Christ became ours. The Church became ours. And yes, the earth and universe belong to us. All things are ours. The merits of the Heart of Christ...the merits of Our Lady and all the Saints...the treasury of the Church belongs to us. Knowing that we have received so much, we should give ourselves to the good Lord. We should belong to Him. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Common Doctor of the Church, defines the term Christian as “one who belongs to Christ.” What a great privilege to say to the Son of God, “I am all Thine and all I have is Thine.” But let us not have any other master than Christ. The worldly man...the sinner...has as many masters as passions. Lust says to such a man...”you are mine.” Avarice says to such a man...”you belong to me.” Let us belong to one Master...and that Master is Christ. 2nd Sunday after Pentecost: Many at this time are sadly fulfilling one of the themes song of our day, namely the one entitled: “I am on a Highway to Hell.” The Love of God found in the Most Blessed Sacrament compels us to leave this wide and often traveled highway behind and enter into the House of the Lord. Not a few on this highway, however, claim to have excuses for traveling it, chief among them are scandals in the clergy. When we look a little closer at History and power of this Sacrament of Love, we find that there are no real excuses big or strong enough to ignore the invitations of the Blessed Lord to make an exit from this evil highway and come to the great supper that has been prepared for those who respond... Is the Holy Mass just a liturgical key that unlocks the Tabernacle door?? In the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel we hear of how the people after being fed with the multiplication of the loaves desired to make Our Blessed Lord their King. But Our Lord fled into the mountain alone, a figure of Calvary. What these people really wanted was the same as the Samaritan woman at the well... That they be given this food and water always. They wanted Our Lord to be their bread king. They wanted a BANQUET always... a banquet without sacrifice! But He fled from them until they grasped that He is the divine Victim...and cannot be approached well without some sacrifice. In a word, He does not want to be know apart from His Cross, His Passion, apart from Calvary. The same is true for all time. Thus we have the Mass to make Calvary present to us again because this is where He especially wants us to approach Him, to know Him, and to love Him, calling upon His name. And He wants us to bring our sacrifices… our crosses! Never be without a cross at the Holy Mass! “Alas, for many good Christians the Eucharist consists merely of Holy Communion. They do not come to Mass for the purpose of adoring, praising, and blessing the Most Holy Trinity, ‘per Ipsum, et cum Ipso, et in Ipso,’ but only in order to receive Holy Communion. For too many Holy Mass is, after all, but the liturgical key which opens the tabernacle door. The official praise given to God by the Church though the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is very often entirely overlooked”—Fr. Mateo. At one time, we honored men of valor who fought and died in service of their homeland. Once we honored men like Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, but now we honor and make a monument out of the perverse and sodomitical bar known as the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. Our Lord wept over Jerusalem, but now He weeps over the infidelity of what was formally the Christian world. Our Lord is perhaps offering us one last merciful visitation before the Divine Wrath is visited upon us. Let us not waste this precious time of grace.

Holy Thursday: St. Jean Marie Vianney once said: “Leave a parish for twenty years without a priest, and they will end by worshiping the beasts there.” The priest brings order to souls, families, parishes, even the whole world. This is why the devil confessed that had there been a few more John Vianney’s he would be defeated. At the ordination of the priest, his soul is re-ordered, refashioned to act in the person of Christ the Head. This re-ordering enables the priest to bring the order established by Christ on the Cross to bear in our life and even in the whole world...bringing victory to God and His Holy Church. Baptism is the plank by which we leave the kingdom of this world and enter upon the Ship, the Barque of St. Peter, that is, Holy Roman Catholic Church which takes us to the heavenly shore. This is why the effect of Baptism (i.e., incorporation into the Mystical Body of Christ) is absolutely necessary for salvation. And this is why our baptismal vows take the form of rejecting the glamour of this world and its overlord… Satan, while professing belief in God and all the tenets of the Creed. Thus, St. Paul in the Lesson today: “One Body and one Spirit… One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father… Who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen.” This spiritual birth can only happen once, just as we can only be born into this world once. There is only ONE Baptism, and it can only be applied ONCE. But what happens if we jump ship? What happens if we fall out by committing a mortal sin? We need to be rescued… offered a second chance… a second plank to enter once again on to the Ship heading to the celestial shore of heaven. Thus, St. Jerome says, the Sacrament of “Penance is a second plank after shipwreck” ((Ep. cxxx), cf. ST III, 84, 6). It is said that when the prophet Elias ascended upwards in a fiery chariot, he let his woolen mantle...his scapular if you will...fall into the hands of the prophet Eliseus. The woolen garment was the habit of Elias, his master. This action of Elias pre-figures the action of Mary who would later let her mantle of salvation...her Brown Scapular...fall into the hands of St. Simon Stock when her spiritual children were in dire need. When the priest enrolled me in the Brown Scapular in years past, he prayed: Receive this blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that, by Her merits, it may be worn with no stain of sin and may protect you from all harm and bring you into everlasting life. If Mary protects us, whom shall we fear? If our Lady crushed the head of Satan himself, then she can certainly protect us from the attacks of demons. Therefore, our Brown Scapulars are a sign and guarantee of salvation, for Mary will never fail us. We hear her words to St. Simon Stock...her solemn, unbreakable promise: Whosoever shall die invested in this habit, shall not undergo the torments of hell. And because of our Lady’s promise in connection with the Sabbatine Privilege, those who wear the Brown Scapular will find a speedy release from Purgatory. During the Christmas Octave, a sort of conference was presented in four sermons... These sermons cover why God became man, in Latin Cur Deus Homo. Here are the remaining two parts.
In these two last parts we focus in on the physical way in which Our Lord saves us, namely by His taking up our human nature to "divinize" it. Here we consider some of the modern usages of this way of salvation which has, it seems to me, been pushed too far... leading to things like the "anonymous Christian" or a new form of universalism where all are saved. We also propose the cause of this, namely a sort of inversion or reversal in the direction of Christ's saving action. The Scriptures, Fathers and Doctors discuss the matter as Christ assuming... taking up our nature to divinize it. In the modern usage, however, this is somehow reversed such that it is claimed that He unites Himself to each man. In my estimation, this inversion/reversal has caused much confusion; and, what it is more, I have yet to find it expressed in this way in the writings of the Fathers and Doctors (I will keep my eyes out as this is a most interesting subject).

The Council of Trent stated: "Matrimony is a holy thing and is to be treated in a holy manner." One way to see its holiness is by examining its place in the hierarchy of God's plan. The Fathers and the Doctors of the Church as well as many subsequent teachings clearly show an connection between virginity/celibacy and holy matrimony with virginity and celibacy being placed above and considered more excellent than marriage. When virginity and celibacy are in place, they keep marriage in its proper place. They elevate marriage. They help keep marriage holy. But, sad to say, most today do not appreciate virginity...and as a result, marriage suffers a reduction and impoverishment. We are in a huge tug of war on the matter of holy matrimony as we have never been heretofore...and we are losing the battle because we are lacking our immoveable anchor ... celibacy and virginity. Marcion of Sinope (d. 160) started a heresy early in the Church by teaching that the God of the Old Testament was different from the God of the New Testament. The Marcionists believed that the wrathful Hebrew God must be separate than the all-forgiving, all merciful God of the New Testament. Thus, for Marcion there was a sort of before and after in God, a certain opposition of the God of past times with the God of the present times. (In this Marcion acted as a precursor to the communist approach to history as being a dialectical struggle between a thesis and its antithesis. Surely, it is not accidental that Marcion named his major work, “Antithesis”.) Marcionism seems to have resurfaced in many ways in our times as various efforts have been made explain away the “harsh” and disciplinarian ways of the Church of old with new more lenient and accepting ways of the Church in our modern times. God the Holy Ghost, the soul of the Church Herself, gives the lie to this thinking...and its effort, showing that we cannot validly oppose one time of the Church to another time like our own. We cannot safely say that this or that doctrine need no longer be believed or practiced… that this or that previously approved and long tested discipline was wrong. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI indicated something of this in his letter accompanying Summorum Pontificum, saying: “What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful” (Letter July 7, 2007). When we appear before the Son of God and the Son of Mary as our Judge, He will take account of our crimes in a divine courtroom. Sin abounds and yet very few people seek eternal debt relief in the Sacrament of Penance, and very few do acts of penance and satisfaction in Christ to pay down temporal debts that will have to be paid in Purgatory. And yet, it is so easy to move the Heart of the Merciful King. He is so willing to forgive our debts. Although the wicked servant in today's Gospel could never have equaled the mercy shown by the King, at least there should have been a proportional forgiveness of debt to that of the King. The mercy of God ought to have been a stimulus for an attitude of forgiveness towards others. In the day of judgment, the good Lord will treat each of us servants as we have treated our fellow servants. St. Maria Goretti provides a wonderful example of forgiving debts.
