⁣⁣The three hallmarks of Lent are prayer, penance and conversion. Fundamentally, conversion means moving from love of self to love of God. It means renouncing one’s own senses, passions, judgments, and will. It is never easy because our strongest inclination is towards love of self. Yet the only thing that brings true joy is a real and ongoing conversion. And all of us are always in dire need of conversion. Conversion is a grace, for which we must pray and which is not possible without penance. Here are seven examples of true Christian joy that ought to inspire us toward conversion. Each example has to do with possessing God which, as the Cure of Ars explains, is the joy of joys. [1] The joy of conversion seen in the Prodigal Son and St. Augustine. [2] The joy of the Christian Life. [3] The joy of martyrdom seen in St. James and St. Agnes. [4] The Seven Joys of St. Joseph, [5] the Seven Joys of Mary, [6] the joy of the Sacred Heart, and [7] the joy of Holy Communion. ⁣Why does God allow evil? So that good might come from it. The example cited in today's sermon is the extraordinary and heroic Charity displayed by Father Peter Whelan at the Andersonville prison camp during the War of Northern Aggression aka War for Southern Independence aka War Between the States.

⁣Continuation of the sermon Devotion of Devotions [On the Sacred Heart].
Following a review of the four immediate and three ultimate aims of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Father explains how, on a daily basis, we can practice and grow in this essential devotion. [1] To excite our heart to love Jesus more we ought to: (1) Do what pleases the Heart of Jesus; (2) Avoid what displeases Him most; (3) Consciously carry out daily thoughts, words and actions out of love for Him; (4) Consecrate one’s self and family to the Sacred Heart; and foster (5) Devotion to Our Lord’s Passion; and (6) Devotion to Blessed Sacrament. [2] To do reparation to the Sacred Heart we should: (1) Pray Acts of Reparation, (2) Offer Mass and Holy Communion in reparation, (3) Be faithful to the First Friday devotion, and (4) Offer Holy Hours in reparation. [3] To increase our veneration, we can honor the Image of the Sacred Heart. Glance at It frequently, making small acts of love. [4] To grow in our trust of the Sacred Heart, let us: (1) Invoke Him in all difficulties, needs, sufferings, and sorrows; and (2) Enter in spirit into the Heart of Jesus. ⁣Four of the greatest disciples of the Sacred Heart are the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John the Apostle, St. Gertrude the Great and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The Sacred Heart is the principal sign of the infinite Love of our Savior. All devotion to the Sacred Heart is given to Christ Himself and we therefore ought to offer supreme worship to the Sacred Heart. The aim and purpose of such devotion is to make our hearts like unto His own. We wish to reciprocate the love of Our Lord and stir up in our souls appropriate acts enlivened by that Love, such as acts of adoration, thanksgiving, reparation, love, and supplication. ⁣God is allowing us to be punished for leaving a vacuum by forgetting Him…and not fulfilling His Commands. This vacuum is being filled, willy nilly by something that is similar to Catholicism…but is not the sweet yoke of Christ. The more we pull away from preaching and teaching that Christ is the King of all nations, the more we will be subjected to a different king… Mohammed. Take your pick. Christ the King or Mohammed. If we do not want “this King to rule over us” then it will be the crescent and rule by the sword. No wonder St. Bernadette said all she feared was bad Catholics! No amount of bombs and troops will change this either. We are being punished! Only our conversion will reverse things. Let us strive, therefore, to be faithful and attentive to God and His Church and all They command, come what may… while we pass through this "little while." The basic underlying principle of morality is to do good and avoid evil. Throughout the lives of the saints we find this principle taken a step further in that they strove with God to help others do good and to avoid evil. The saints strove to limit and halt evil in the world with all their strength. Why? So that more souls would come to their senses, convert, and be marked with the sign of God, the Cross, on their brows. Often the saints would even go so far as to take the place of those failing and causing evil in the world in order to undo it and make the evil they causes cease or decrease. This is a theme present in the lives of the saints. Let us adopt it, embrace it ourselves, and we will be counted among their number! ⁣Blessed Alan de La Roche was a Dominican friar and priest who lived during the 15th Century. He was an eminent theologian and was famous for his sermons. Blessed Alan was chosen by the our dearest Lord and the Blessed Mother to promote once again the prayerful recitation of the Most Holy Rosary after many if not most of the faithful had neglected to pray it for more than a century. It was most appropriate that a spiritual son of St. Dominic should be chosen for such a great work. Blessed Alan began his holy mission in 1460 after a special warning from Our Lord, Who wished to spur him on to preach the Holy Rosary. The Son of God and Son of Mary literally spoke to Blessed Alan from the Sacred Host during the Sacrifice of the Mass. Our Lord asked His chosen priest: How can you crucify Me again so soon? Blessed Alan responded: What did You say, Lord? Jesus answered: You crucified Me once before by your sins and I would willingly be crucified again rather than have My Father offended by the sins you used to commit. You are crucifying Me again now because you have all the learning and understanding that you need to preach My Mother's Rosary, and you are not doing so. This terrible reproach of our Lord aimed at Blessed Alan, caused the Dominican Friar to resolve solemnly to preach the Rosary unceasingly for the rest of his earthly life. Blessed Alan did not seek to change the Rosary. He did not add novelties to the prayer or increase the number of mysteries, nor did he seek to subtract prayers or shorten existing ones. He simply reintroduced the Holy Rosary to a people that had forgotten this very powerful prayer. But the liturgical revolution that radically changed the Holy Mass of the Latin Rite would become a revolution against simple piety that would eventually infect the Rosary. We were told by liturgical reformers that the Old Mass was lacking…that it needed to be updated and reformed…that it didn’t meet the needs of modern man. We are now told that the Traditional form of the Rosary was not as Christological…not as Christ-centered as it ought to be…that it required new mysteries that would enlighten and illuminate those stuck in the Middle Ages. And so, we are led to believe that the Holy Rosary, given by our Blessed Mother to St. Dominic was somehow defective and needed to be reformed and updated. What we need is not novelties but rather a man like Blessed Alan to preach the traditional form of the Rosary. ⁣The saintly friends of the paralytic in today’s Gospel carried him on his bed of pain to Our Blessed Lord and King, Jesus Christ. Even when they met obstacles such as the crowd and the house in which His Majesty was sitting, they overcame them. The crowd represents human respect and the house material obstacles. True friends walk together toward Christ and let nothing get in the way of doing what is right for the friend. In reviewing our life, we will surely discover most of sins were committed with someone or because of someone’s example that was not really our true friend...someone not willing to walk to Christ with us. On the other hand, if we recall all the times we avoided sin, we will discover it was often because of a true friend and his example. An ancient and memorable example of this truth is given in the story of Eulogius and the Cripple. For more please visit http://www.reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest
