⁣Saturday after Ash Wednesday: The Fathers liken the ship laden with the Apostles on the sea of Galilee to the Holy Church buffeted by the waves of a hostile world. The first long quote from St. Bede used in this sermon comes from Matins for Saturday after Ash Wednesday. Some phrases from this quote: “Buffeted by the waves of a hostile world and the winds of unclean spirits, she [the Church] makes every effort to arrive at the shores of heavenly peace as in a safe harbour. ....often the Church is not only beset, but also besmeared by such fury on the part of unbelievers that it seems her Saviour had utterly abandoned her for the time being—were that indeed possible. ... He strengthens those who wrestle with the enemy, that they may be victorious, and bestows upon the victors an eternal crown.” The other long quote from Pope Pius XI reads: “At times the bark of Peter, favored by the winds, goes happily forward; at other times it appears to be swallowed up by the waves and on the point of being lost. Has not this ship always aboard the Divine Pilot who knows when to calm the angry waves and the winds? And who is it but Christ Himself Who alone is all-powerful, who brings it about that every persecution which is launched against the faithful should react to the lasting benefit of the Church? As St. Hilary writes, ‘it is a prerogative of the Church that she is the vanquisher when she is persecuted, that she captures our intellects when her doctrines are questioned, that she conquers all at the very moment when she is abandoned by all’” (Pope Pius XI on the persecution of the Church in Mexico). May we wrestle and strain at the oars so as to win...and be crowned and reap everlasting benefits from this present trial. ⁣2nd Sunday of Lent: The true story of Padre Almeida of the San Diego monastery outside of Quito has some valuable lessons to teach us about (i) what is happening to the Church in our times; (ii) how to look at our lives as faithful Catholics, and (iii) why we must strive to make our Lent fruitful. Also, the painting of the Inferno by Hernando de la Cruz is helpful for us in putting the lessons of Padre Almeida into action, most especially during Lent. A picture of this painting can be located found on the internet. There are 25 sins listed in the paining... Murmurador (rumormonger, insinuator, backbiter), Vana (vain), Adúltera (adulteress), Impenitente (unrepentant), Cruel (cruel), Bailarín (dancer), Deshonesto (dishonest), Injusto (unjust), Borracho (drunkard), Votador (blasphemer, swearer), Deliciosa (prostitute, harlot), Registrador (?), Usurero (usurer), Homicida (murderer), Hechicera (sorcerer, witch), Perezoso (slothful), Traidor (traitor), Tahúr (cheater at cards), De duro corazón (hard-hearted), Vengativo (vengeful), Nefando (loathsome, vile, abominable), Ladrón (thief), Sacrílego (sacrilegious, heretic), Imprudente (imprudent, foolhardy), Impuro (impure). May we never commit them or any other mortal sin so as never to join those who are being justly punished for them down below. http://www.aotmclub.com/index.asp?Pag... for the Q&A part!
For several decades, confusion has plagued the Catholic Church because of the great crisis that has engulfed Her human element. The Church can never fail, of course, but in her human element she can and often is afflicted by the powers of darkness. Christ Himself asked the question: "When the Son of Man returns will He find faith?"

⁣Today's gospel of the ten lepers provides us with two powerful images of the theocentricism of prayer and of the four kinds of prayer: adoration, thanksgiving, satisfaction for sin, and supplication. It is on account of the nature of God that there are specifically these four kinds of prayers. An awareness and focus on God in our prayer will be our biggest aid in praying as we ought, with a pure and efficacious prayer. A holy Carmelite monk wisely advised that we should hold ourselves in prayer before God like a dumb or paralyzed beggar at a rich man's gate. Thus, our prayer will be less self-centered and distracted and move towards being more God-centered. For more please visit http://svfonline.org/ & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

⁣Our Lady in her Immaculate Conception is Virgo Potens... the Virgin Most Powerful. Pope Pius XII tells us her power is nearly infinite ... being associated intimately with Her Son and King. He explains that she has this power not only by divine association but also by conquest. This is because she was conceived immaculate in the Divine Mind at the beginning of the Creation at the same time as Her Lord and King. This places her outside of the envelope of sin opened by the devil and Adam. This places her before the creation of all other things...angels, men, Sun, Moon, etc. Thus, she has dominion over them all! This means she can conquer all things...demons, temptations, sinful habits, etc... if only we turn to her... Virgo Potens, ora pro nobis! ⁣Emily, a young healthy woman of 24 living in Bruges, Belgium, recently obtained legal permission to commit doctor assisted suicide because of “unbearable psychological suffering.” Thank goodness she did not go through with this evil choice. Emily and her dysfunctional family and life typifies modern western civilization: divorced, entertained, medicated, doubting, impure and depressed… in despair. The cure for Emily and what she stands for is captured in another young lady...a saint of the Lowlands, the 15th Century victim soul, St. Lydwine of Schiedem. The contrast between these two women, each a type of something bigger than themselves, is amazing and instructive. In a word, St. Lydwine possesses the solution to the depression and despair of Emily. How important it is for us respond to the kisses of God, to be drawn by Him such that He shows us His wonders...many of which require we look back before we can overcome the present. St. Lydwine is someone to look back upon so that any present crisis can be conquered. For more please visit http://www.reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

“Most people consider hunger, plague and war to be punishment from God because in them they see more clearly the hand of divine justice that afflicts the nations. But these adversities, however great and terrible they may be, do not appear as punishments if we look with the pure eyes of faith illuminated with the light of God and compare them with other afflictions of the justice of an offended God. These are spiritual punishments which consist in decreasing the good effects of religion in a town, province or kingdom, or in stripping them, or in the withdrawal of God and abandoning them to the disorder of their passions, to error, to heresy, in one word to Satan’s claws. As there is no greater good in the world than true faith and the Catholic religion, neither can there be a more cruel, more terrible more terrifying affliction for a Catholic nation than being handed over to the devils and to the wicked sects so that in punishment for their sins they root out the holy tree of Religion. As a consequence, they burn the churches, kill the priests and remove all the visible signs of faith. Temporal punishments, properly speaking, are not real punishments, but rather mercies of the Lord, that with them it would oblige persons to wake up from the lethargy of vices and sins, to return to God and be converted. But spiritual punishments are of wrath, indignation and fury. They are the true outcome of the anger of a God who turns the obstinate sinner away from Him. They are the real temporal abandonment, the source and the reason of that eternal abandonment where the demons and those who are condemned in hell” (Bd. Francis Palau, OCD, The Struggle of the Soul with God, 2nd Conf, Article 1, no. 4).

⁣Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus: Ancient Heliopolis, or the City of the Sun in Egypt, had a temple complex that was devoted to the sun god known as Ra. The Egyptians practiced the most abominable rituals there including the sacrificing of infants. In the Temple of Ra, one could see some 350 false, pagan idols which received daily honors and rituals. But ancient literary sources tell us that this pagan temple soon received a visit from the Divine Infant. Immediately, all the Egyptian idols and the demons behind them prostrated themselves on the ground, so that all of them were lying on their faces shattered and broken to pieces. All must bow and bend before the Divine Name of the Son of God and Son of Mary. The Divine Name of Jesus is most powerful and is able to defend us from the greatest assaults. The idols of lust, sensuality, materialism, avarice, pride, and all the demonic vices are toppled before Him and fall before the one who but utters the Holy Name with faith. “That mystery [the Incarnation] the Jews traduce, the Greeks deride, but we adore... For it is a fact that the more unbelievers pour scorn on Him, so much the more does He make His Godhead evident. The things which they, as men, rule out as impossible, He plainly shows to be possible; that which they deride as unfitting, His goodness makes most fit; and things which these wiseacres laugh at as ‘human’ He by His inherent might declares divine. Thus by what seems His utter poverty and weakness on the cross He overturns the pomp and parade of idols, and quietly and hiddenly wins over the mockers and unbelievers to recognize Him as God”—St. Athanasius (de Incarnatione Verbi Dei, ch. 1).
