⁣Why does God allow evil? So that good might come from it. The example cited in today's sermon is the extraordinary and heroic Charity displayed by Father Peter Whelan at the Andersonville prison camp during the War of Northern Aggression aka War for Southern Independence aka War Between the States.

⁣St. Gertude the Great (1256-1302) was a German Benedictine mystic nun. She is the only female saint honored with the title “the Great.” She had her first vision of Christ when she was twenty and our Lord appeared to her many times. Once He revealed to her: “Whoever in his trials and adversities, units himself with My sufferings and strives to imitate my patience and resignation will truly repose on My Heart and participate in all the merits of My life.” She meditated much on the passion, had a tender love for Our Lady, and was very devoted to the Holy Souls. Three of the most outstanding graces she received were [1] the sacred stigmata, [2] a transverebration, and [3] the interchange of Christ’s heart with hers. ⁣Continuation of the sermon Devotion of Devotions [On the Sacred Heart].
Following a review of the four immediate and three ultimate aims of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Father explains how, on a daily basis, we can practice and grow in this essential devotion. [1] To excite our heart to love Jesus more we ought to: (1) Do what pleases the Heart of Jesus; (2) Avoid what displeases Him most; (3) Consciously carry out daily thoughts, words and actions out of love for Him; (4) Consecrate one’s self and family to the Sacred Heart; and foster (5) Devotion to Our Lord’s Passion; and (6) Devotion to Blessed Sacrament. [2] To do reparation to the Sacred Heart we should: (1) Pray Acts of Reparation, (2) Offer Mass and Holy Communion in reparation, (3) Be faithful to the First Friday devotion, and (4) Offer Holy Hours in reparation. [3] To increase our veneration, we can honor the Image of the Sacred Heart. Glance at It frequently, making small acts of love. [4] To grow in our trust of the Sacred Heart, let us: (1) Invoke Him in all difficulties, needs, sufferings, and sorrows; and (2) Enter in spirit into the Heart of Jesus. ⁣Four of the greatest disciples of the Sacred Heart are the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John the Apostle, St. Gertrude the Great and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The Sacred Heart is the principal sign of the infinite Love of our Savior. All devotion to the Sacred Heart is given to Christ Himself and we therefore ought to offer supreme worship to the Sacred Heart. The aim and purpose of such devotion is to make our hearts like unto His own. We wish to reciprocate the love of Our Lord and stir up in our souls appropriate acts enlivened by that Love, such as acts of adoration, thanksgiving, reparation, love, and supplication. ⁣God is allowing us to be punished for leaving a vacuum by forgetting Him…and not fulfilling His Commands. This vacuum is being filled, willy nilly by something that is similar to Catholicism…but is not the sweet yoke of Christ. The more we pull away from preaching and teaching that Christ is the King of all nations, the more we will be subjected to a different king… Mohammed. Take your pick. Christ the King or Mohammed. If we do not want “this King to rule over us” then it will be the crescent and rule by the sword. No wonder St. Bernadette said all she feared was bad Catholics! No amount of bombs and troops will change this either. We are being punished! Only our conversion will reverse things. Let us strive, therefore, to be faithful and attentive to God and His Church and all They command, come what may… while we pass through this "little while." The basic underlying principle of morality is to do good and avoid evil. Throughout the lives of the saints we find this principle taken a step further in that they strove with God to help others do good and to avoid evil. The saints strove to limit and halt evil in the world with all their strength. Why? So that more souls would come to their senses, convert, and be marked with the sign of God, the Cross, on their brows. Often the saints would even go so far as to take the place of those failing and causing evil in the world in order to undo it and make the evil they causes cease or decrease. This is a theme present in the lives of the saints. Let us adopt it, embrace it ourselves, and we will be counted among their number!
