Hilaire Belloc examines the five most destructive heretical movements to have affected Christian Civilization: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism (Cathar), The Reformation (Protestant), and “The Modern Phase.” Belloc describes how these movements began, how they spread, and how they continued to influence the world up until the time of his writing (1936). The Chapter on Islam is especially relevant in light of current events; in it Belloc accurately predicts the renewal of Jihadist aggression towards Western Civilization. This series will be submitted in seven parts.

Traditional Skills With Nathaniel Slattery

What do you think he means when he says American government is essentially monarchic

I think what he means by this is that especially during the time he composed this work (c. 1936) power was being consolidated into one man - the President, much like a monarchy (before the creation and intervention of Parliament) had power consolidated in one man. However, in the UK, power is more evenly distributed and therefore 'democratic' as coalitions between parties tend to form despite most Americans only hearing about the Conservative, and Labour (Liberal) parties.

@VendeeGems: I have my own opinions on this. He is echoing Tocqueville at the time of Jackson, our best President
