Saint Teresa of Jesus (15 October): Doctrix Mystica

St. Teresa of Jesus, a spiritual doctor of Holy Mother Church, was born in Avila, Spain, in the year 1515 AD. When only a child of seven years old, she ran away from home with her brother in the hope of being martyred by the Muslims in North Africa. In this way, Teresa said she could come to see God face to face. At the age of eighteen, Teresa joined the Carmelite Order and chose Christ as her heavenly Bridegroom. With the help of St. John of the Cross and others, she reformed most of the Carmelite convents of Spain and founded new ones. She reached the highest degree of prayer and through mystical prayer Teresa obtained such knowledge of divine things that she was rightly named a Doctor of the Church. St. Teresa of Jesus, is honored by the Church as the virgo seraphic or the seraphic virgin. She is called doctrix mystica, that is a doctor of mystical theology. As one pope put it: Teresa has been given to the Church by God as a teacher of the spiritual life. The mysteries of the inner mystical life which the holy Fathers propounded unsystematically and without orderly sequence, she has presented with unparalleled clarity.
