⁣Quinquagesima Sunday: February 14th is the Feast of the great Catholic martyr and priest, St. Valentine. His persecutor, known to history as Claudius II, not only hated Catholicism, but also forbade his own Roman soldiers to marry. St. Valentine performed secret nuptial Masses for those Catholic soldiers that had found a spouse. The priest, Valentine, was arrested, beaten with clubs, and eventually beheaded. A number of men have said that life is not worth living unless there is something worth dying for. When one is truly in love with another, he is willing to suffer and even die for his beloved. Martyrdom requires a special grace from heaven. But in addition to this grace, the would be martyr ought to have trained for the moment. He ought to have prepared himself with certain exercises that formed him to be a spiritual athlete ready to face the enemy. Lent provides this time of exercise that prepares us to be martyrs...witnesses for Christ. For more please visit http://reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

“The observance of Lent is the very badge of the Christian warfare. By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of Christ. By it we avert the scourges of divine justice. By it we gain strength against the princes of darkness, for it shields us with heavenly help. Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it would be a detriment to God's glory, a disgrace to the Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls. Neither can it be doubted that such negligence would become the source of misery to the world, of public calamity, and of private woe.”—Pope Benedict XIV

⁣For many it is clear that the Bride of Christ, the Holy Catholic Church, is going through a most trying passion at this time. Some of the indicators of this reality include the large number of fallen-aways among our family and friends; the divisions among our families, parishes and the Church as a whole; the difficulty we have in making advances in practice of virtue and the spiritual life; the widespread practice of divorce; the difficulty in escaping from error and vice where ever we may go. A victim soul of the Church, St. Lydwine of Schiedem (d. 1433), shows us what the Church in a passion looks like. But she also shows how the power of Christmas is always available to those who are willing to respond to the Kiss of the Word Incarnate and be drawn to love the Cross. Few are called to suffer like this saint, but we are given a Cross to carry (primarily our duties of our state in life)...and Christmas gives us the power to kiss it, and be drawn to love it so that we will be shown where His Majesty feeds His beloved to keep them from going astray.
